- Numbers 27:6
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהֹוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר׃
And GOD said to Moses,
Targum Onkelos
וַאֲמַר יְיָ לְמֹשֶׁה לְמֵימַר׃
Adonoy spoke to Moshe saying:
- Numbers 27:7
כֵּן בְּנוֹת צְלׇפְחָד דֹּבְרֹת נָתֹן תִּתֵּן לָהֶם אֲחֻזַּת נַחֲלָה בְּתוֹךְ אֲחֵי אֲבִיהֶם וְהַעֲבַרְתָּ אֶת־נַחֲלַת אֲבִיהֶן לָהֶן׃
“The plea of Zelophehad’s daughters is just: you should give them a hereditary holding among their father’s kinsmen; transfer their father’s share to them.
Targum Onkelos
יָאוּת בְּנָת צְלָפְחָד מְמַלְּלָן מִתָּן תִּתֵּין לְהוֹן אֲחוּדַּת אַחְסָנָא בְּגוֹ אֲחֵי אֲבוּהוֹן וְתַעְבַּר יָת אַחְסָנַת אֲבוּהוֹן לְהוֹן׃
“Tzelofchad’s daughters speak justly, give them a hereditary portion of land among their father’s brothers, and transfer the inheritance of their father to them.
- Numbers 27:8
וְאֶל־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל תְּדַבֵּר לֵאמֹר אִישׁ כִּי־יָמוּת וּבֵן אֵין לוֹ וְהַעֲבַרְתֶּם אֶת־נַחֲלָתוֹ לְבִתּוֹ׃
“Further, speak to the Israelite people as follows: ‘If a man dies without leaving a son, you shall transfer his property to his daughter.
Targum Onkelos
וְעִם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל תְּמַלֵּיל לְמֵימַר גְּבַר אֲרֵי יְמוּת וּבַר לֵית לֵיהּ וְתַעְבְּרוּן יָת אַחְסָנְתֵיהּ לִבְרַתֵּיהּ׃
Speak to Bnei Yisroel and tell them, that if a man dies and has no son, his hereditary property shall be transferred to his daughter.
- Numbers 27:9
וְאִם־אֵין לוֹ בַּת וּנְתַתֶּם אֶת־נַחֲלָתוֹ לְאֶחָיו׃
If he has no daughter, you shall assign his property to his brothers.
Targum Onkelos
וְאִם לֵית לֵיהּ בְּרַתָּא וְתִתְּנוּן יָת אַחְסָנְתֵיהּ לַאֲחוֹהִי׃
If he has no daughter, you shall give his hereditary property to his brothers.
- Numbers 27:10
וְאִם־אֵין לוֹ אַחִים וּנְתַתֶּם אֶת־נַחֲלָתוֹ לַאֲחֵי אָבִיו׃
If he has no brothers, you shall assign his property to his father’s brothers.
Targum Onkelos
וְאִם לֵית לֵיהּ אַחִין וְתִתְּנוּן יָת אַחְסָנְתֵיהּ לַאֲחֵי אֲבוּהִי׃
If he has no brothers, you shall give his hereditary property to his father’s brothers.
- Numbers 27:11
וְאִם־אֵין אַחִים לְאָבִיו וּנְתַתֶּם אֶת־נַחֲלָתוֹ לִשְׁאֵרוֹ הַקָּרֹב אֵלָיו מִמִּשְׁפַּחְתּוֹ וְיָרַשׁ אֹתָהּ וְהָיְתָה לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְחֻקַּת מִשְׁפָּט כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהֹוָה אֶת־מֹשֶׁה׃
If his father had no brothers, you shall assign his property to his nearest relative in his own clan, who shall inherit it.’ This shall be the law of procedure for the Israelites, in accordance with GOD’s command to Moses.”
Targum Onkelos
וְאִם לֵית אַחִין לַאֲבוּהִי וְתִתְּנוּן יָת אַחְסָנְתֵיהּ לְקָרִיבֵיהּ דְּקָרִיב לֵיהּ מִזַּרְעִיתֵיהּ וְיֵירַת יָתַהּ וּתְהֵי לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לִגְזֵירַת דִּין כְּמָא דְּפַקֵּיד יְיָ יָת מֹשֶׁה׃
If his father had no brothers, you shall give his hereditary property to the relative closest to him in his family who will then inherit it. This shall remain a decreed law for Bnei Yisroel, as Adonoy had commanded Moshe.”
- Numbers 27:12
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהֹוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה עֲלֵה אֶל־הַר הָעֲבָרִים הַזֶּה וּרְאֵה אֶת־הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר נָתַתִּי לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃
GOD said to Moses, “Ascend these heights of Abarim and view the land that I have given to the Israelite people.
Targum Onkelos
וַאֲמַר יְיָ לְמֹשֶׁה סַק לְטוּרָא דְּעִבְרָאֵי הָדֵין וַחְזִי יָת אַרְעָא דִּיהַבִית לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃
Adonoy said to Moshe: “Go up this Avarim Mountain and look at the land that I have given to Bnei Yisroel.
- Numbers 27:13
וְרָאִיתָה אֹתָהּ וְנֶאֱסַפְתָּ אֶל־עַמֶּיךָ גַּם־אָתָּה כַּאֲשֶׁר נֶאֱסַף אַהֲרֹן אָחִיךָ׃
When you have seen it, you too shall be gathered to your kin, just as your brother Aaron was.
Targum Onkelos
וְתִחְזֵי יָתַהּ וְתִתְכְּנֵישׁ לְעַמָּךְ אַף אַתְּ כְּמָא דְּאִתְכְּנֵישׁ אַהֲרֹן אֲחוּךְ׃
[After] you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aharon was gathered.
- Numbers 27:14
כַּאֲשֶׁר מְרִיתֶם פִּי בְּמִדְבַּר־צִן בִּמְרִיבַת הָעֵדָה לְהַקְדִּישֵׁנִי בַמַּיִם לְעֵינֵיהֶם הֵם מֵי־מְרִיבַת קָדֵשׁ מִדְבַּר־צִן׃
For, in the wilderness of Zin, when the community was contentious, you disobeyed My command to uphold My sanctity in their sight by means of the water.” Those are the waters of Meribath-kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin.
Targum Onkelos
כְּמָא דְּסָרֵיבְתּוּן עַל מֵימְרִי בְּמַדְבְּרָא דְּצִין בְּמַצּוּת כְּנִשְׁתָּא לְקַדָּשׁוּתִי בְּמַיָּא לְעֵינֵיהוֹן אִנּוּן מֵי מַצּוּת רְקַם מַדְבְּרָא דְּצִין׃
Because you disobeyed My words in the wilderness of Tzin, when the community quarreled, [you were] to sanctify Me through the water, before their eyes.” Those were the waters of dispute at Kadeish [Rekam], in the wilderness of Tzin.
- Numbers 27:15
וַיְדַבֵּר מֹשֶׁה אֶל־יְהֹוָה לֵאמֹר׃
Moses spoke to GOD, saying,
Targum Onkelos
וּמַלֵּיל מֹשֶׁה קֳדָם יְיָ לְמֵימַר׃
Moshe spoke to Adonoy, saying:
- Numbers 27:16
יִפְקֹד יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵי הָרוּחֹת לְכׇל־בָּשָׂר אִישׁ עַל־הָעֵדָה׃
“Let GOD, Source of the breath of all flesh, appoint someone over the community
Targum Onkelos
יְמַנֵּי יְיָ אֱלָהּ רוּחַיָּא לְכָל בִּשְׂרָא גּוּבְרָא עַל כְּנִשְׁתָּא׃
“Let Adonoy, God of the spirits, appoint a man over the community,
- Numbers 27:17
אֲשֶׁר־יֵצֵא לִפְנֵיהֶם וַאֲשֶׁר יָבֹא לִפְנֵיהֶם וַאֲשֶׁר יוֹצִיאֵם וַאֲשֶׁר יְבִיאֵם וְלֹא תִהְיֶה עֲדַת יְהֹוָה כַּצֹּאן אֲשֶׁר אֵין־לָהֶם רֹעֶה׃
who shall go out before them and come in before them, and who shall take them out and bring them in, so that GOD’s community may not be like sheep that have no shepherd.”
Targum Onkelos
דְּיִפּוֹק קֳדָמֵיהוֹן וּדְיֵיעוֹל קֳדָמֵיהוֹן וּדְיַפֵּיקִנּוּן וּדְיַעֵילִנּוּן וְלָא תְהֵי כְּנִשְׁתָּא דַּייָ כְּעָנָא דְּלֵית לְהוֹן רָעֵי׃
who will go forth before them, and who will come back before them, and who would lead them out and bring them in, so that the community of Adonoy shall not be like sheep that have no shepherd.”
- Numbers 27:18
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהֹוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה קַח־לְךָ אֶת־יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בִּן־נוּן אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר־רוּחַ בּוֹ וְסָמַכְתָּ אֶת־יָדְךָ עָלָיו׃
And GOD answered Moses, “Single out Joshua son of Nun, an inspired man, and lay your hand upon him.
Targum Onkelos
וַאֲמַר יְיָ לְמֹשֶׁה סַב לָךְ יָת יְהוֹשֻעַ בַּר נוּן גְּבַר דְּרוּחַ נְבוּאָה בֵּיהּ וְתִסְמוֹךְ יָת יְדָךְ עֲלוֹהִי׃
Adonoy said to Moshe: “Take to yourself Yehoshua son of Nun, a man in whom there is spirit [of prophecy], and lay your hand on him.
- Numbers 27:19
וְהַעֲמַדְתָּ אֹתוֹ לִפְנֵי אֶלְעָזָר הַכֹּהֵן וְלִפְנֵי כׇּל־הָעֵדָה וְצִוִּיתָה אֹתוֹ לְעֵינֵיהֶם׃
Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before the whole community, and commission him in their sight.
Targum Onkelos
וּתְקִים יָתֵיהּ קֳדָם אֶלְעָזָר כָּהֲנָא וּקְדָם כָּל כְּנִשְׁתָּא וּתְפַקֵּיד יָתֵיהּ לְעֵינֵיהוֹן׃
Stand him before Elozor the kohein and before the entire community, and command him before their eyes.
- Numbers 27:20
וְנָתַתָּה מֵהוֹדְךָ עָלָיו לְמַעַן יִשְׁמְעוּ כׇּל־עֲדַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃
Invest him with some of your authority, so that the whole Israelite community may obey.
Targum Onkelos
וְתִתֵּין מִזִּיוָךְ עֲלוֹהִי בְּדִיל דִּיקַבְּלוּן מִנֵּיהּ כָּל כְּנִשְׁתָּא דִּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃
Bestow some of your radiance on him, so that the entire community of Bnei Yisroel will hear [be receptive to him].
- Numbers 27:21
וְלִפְנֵי אֶלְעָזָר הַכֹּהֵן יַעֲמֹד וְשָׁאַל לוֹ בְּמִשְׁפַּט הָאוּרִים לִפְנֵי יְהֹוָה עַל־פִּיו יֵצְאוּ וְעַל־פִּיו יָבֹאוּ הוּא וְכׇל־בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל אִתּוֹ וְכׇל־הָעֵדָה׃
But he shall present himself to Eleazar the priest, who shall on his behalf seek the decision of the Urim before GOD. By such instruction they shall go out and by such instruction they shall come in, he and all the Israelites, and the whole community.”
Targum Onkelos
וּקְדָם אֶלְעָזָר כָּהֲנָא יְקוּם וְיִשְׁאַל לֵיהּ בְּדִין אוּרַיָּא קֳדָם יְיָ עַל מֵימְרֵיהּ יְהוֹן נָפְקִין וְעַל מֵימְרֵיהּ יְהוֹן עָאלִין הוּא וְכָל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל עִמֵּיהּ וְכָל כְּנִשְׁתָּא׃
He shall stand before Elozor the kohein, and ask, of him, through the judgment of the Urim before Adonoy. By his word they will come out and [by his word they will] go in—he, all Bnei Yisroel with him, and the entire community.”
- Numbers 27:22
וַיַּעַשׂ מֹשֶׁה כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהֹוָה אֹתוֹ וַיִּקַּח אֶת־יְהוֹשֻׁעַ וַיַּעֲמִדֵהוּ לִפְנֵי אֶלְעָזָר הַכֹּהֵן וְלִפְנֵי כׇּל־הָעֵדָה׃
Moses did as GOD commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and before the whole community.
Targum Onkelos
וַעֲבַד מֹשֶׁה כְּמָא דְּפַקֵּיד יְיָ יָתֵיהּ וּדְבַר יָת יְהוֹשֻעַ וַאֲקִימֵיהּ קֳדָם אֶלְעָזָר כָּהֲנָא וּקְדָם כָּל כְּנִשְׁתָּא׃
Moshe did as Adonoy commanded him. He took Yehoshua and presented him to Elozor the kohein and to the entire community.
- Numbers 27:23
וַיִּסְמֹךְ אֶת־יָדָיו עָלָיו וַיְצַוֵּהוּ כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר יְהֹוָה בְּיַד־מֹשֶׁה׃
He laid his hands upon him and commissioned him—as GOD had spoken through Moses.
Targum Onkelos
וּסְמַךְ יָת יְדוֹהִי עֲלוֹהִי וּפַקְּדֵיהּ כְּמָא דְּמַלֵּיל יְיָ בִּידָא דְּמֹשֶׁה׃
He laid his hands on him and commanded him, just as Adonoy had commanded through Moshe.
