  1. Genesis 30:28

And he continued, “Name the wages due from me, and I will pay you.”

    Targum Onkelos

He said, Set your wage for me, and I will give it.

  2. Genesis 30:29

But he said, “You know well how I have served you and how your livestock has fared with me.

    Targum Onkelos

He [Yaakov] said to him, You know how I worked for you, and how your livestock were with me.

  3. Genesis 30:30

For the little you had before I came has grown to much, since GOD has blessed you wherever I turned. And now, when shall I make provision for my own household?”

    Targum Onkelos

For the little you had before I came here has increased and has become a multitude. Adonoy has blessed you with my coming [for my sake]. Now when will I also do something for my own house?

  4. Genesis 30:31

He said, “What shall I pay you?” And Jacob said, “Pay me nothing! If you will do this thing for me, I will again pasture and keep your flocks:

    Targum Onkelos

He [Lavan] said, What shall I give you? Yaakov said, Do not give me anything—if you do this thing for me. I will continue to tend your flock and guard it.

  5. Genesis 30:32

let me pass through your whole flock today, removing from there every speckled and spotted animal—every dark-colored sheep and every spotted and speckled goat. Such shall be my wages.

    Targum Onkelos

I will go through all your flocks this day. I will remove from them every lamb that is speckled, or spotted, and every dark one among the sheep, and every goat that is spotted and speckled. That [kind] will be my wage.

  6. Genesis 30:33

In the future when you go over my wages, let my honesty toward you testify for me: if there are among my goats any that are not speckled or spotted or any sheep that are not dark-colored, they got there by theft.”

    Targum Onkelos

My righteousness shall testify for me in the future when it comes before you regarding my wage. Any goat which is not speckled or spotted, and any sheep that is [not] dark, is stolen [if it is] in my possession.

  7. Genesis 30:34

And Laban said, “Very well, let it be as you say.”

    Targum Onkelos

Lavan said, Agreed, may it be as you say.

  8. Genesis 30:35

But that same day he removed the streaked and spotted he-goats and all the speckled and spotted she-goats—every one that had white on it—and all the dark-colored sheep, and left them in the charge of his sons.

    Targum Onkelos

That day he [Lavan] removed the he-goats that were ringed and spotted, and all the she-goats that were speckled and spotted, everyone that had white in it, and all the dark ones among the sheep; and he gave them to his sons.

  9. Genesis 30:36

And he put a distance of three days’ journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob was pasturing the rest of Laban’s flock.

    Targum Onkelos

He placed a three days journey between himself and Yaakov. Yaakov tended Lavan’s remaining flocks.

  10. Genesis 30:37

Jacob then got fresh shoots of poplar, and of almond and plane, and peeled white stripes in them, laying bare the white of the shoots.

    Targum Onkelos

Yaakov took rods of poplar that were fresh, hazel and chestnut [trees], and peeled white stripes in them by uncovering the white which is in the rods.

  11. Genesis 30:38

The rods that he had peeled he set up in front of the goats in the troughs, the water receptacles, that the goats came to drink from. Their mating occurred when they came to drink,

    Targum Onkelos

He stuck [inserted] the rods that he had peeled into the ducts of the [place of the] watering troughs [the place] where the flock [ewes] came to drink, facing the flock [rams]; that they should become heated when they came to drink.

  12. Genesis 30:39

and since the goats mated by the rods, the goats brought forth streaked, speckled, and spotted young.

    Targum Onkelos

The flock [sheep] became heated [and mated] before the rods, and the flock [sheep] gave birth to ringed, speckled and spotted [offspring].

  13. Genesis 30:40

But Jacob dealt separately with the sheep; he made these animals face the streaked or wholly dark-colored animals in Laban’s flock. And so he produced special flocks for himself, which he did not put with Laban’s flocks.

    Targum Onkelos

Yaakov separated the lambs. He set the faces [at the head] of the flock [sheep] toward [all] the ringed ones and all the dark ones; [he did so] with Lavan’s flocks. He formed separate flocks of his own, and did not set [mix] them with Lavan’s flocks.

  14. Genesis 30:41

    וְהָיָה בְּכׇל־יַחֵם הַצֹּאן הַמְקֻשָּׁרוֹת וְשָׂם יַעֲקֹב אֶת־הַמַּקְלוֹת לְעֵינֵי הַצֹּאן בָּרְהָטִים לְיַחְמֵנָּה בַּמַּקְלוֹת׃

    Moreover, when the sturdier animals were mating, Jacob would place the rods in the troughs, in full view of the animals, so that they mated by the rods;

    Targum Onkelos

    וְהָוֵי בְּכָל עִדָּן דְּמִתְיַחֲמָן עָנָא מְבַכְּרָתָא וּמְשַׁוֵּי יַעֲקֹב יָת חֻטְרַיָּא לְעֵינֵי עָנָא בְּרָטַיָּא לְיַחָמוּתְהוֹן בְּחֻטְרַיָּא׃

When the early-bearing flock [sheep] were heated [to mate], Yaakov placed the rods before the flock’s [sheep’s] eyes at the ducts, so they would be in heat among the rods.

  15. Genesis 30:42

but with the feebler animals he would not place them there. Thus the feeble ones went to Laban and the sturdy to Jacob.

    Targum Onkelos

But when the flock [sheep] were late-bearing, he did not place [the rods before them]. Thus the late-bearing ones were Lavan’s, and the early-bearing ones became the possession of Yaakov.

  16. Genesis 30:43

So the man grew exceedingly prosperous, and came to own large flocks, maidservants and menservants, camels and donkeys.

    Targum Onkelos

The man became tremendously prosperous. He had multipying flocks, female slaves and male slaves, camels and donkeys.

  17. Genesis 31:1

Now he heard the things that Laban’s sons were saying: “Jacob has taken all that was our father’s, and from that which was our father’s he has built up all this wealth.”

    Targum Onkelos

He [Yaakov] heard the words of Lavan’s sons [who were] saying, Yaakov has taken all that belonged to our father. From that which was our father’s, he made [acquired] all this wealth [these possessions].

  18. Genesis 31:2

Jacob also saw that Laban’s manner toward him was not as it had been in the past.

    Targum Onkelos

Yaakov saw [the expression of] Lavan’s face [demeanor] and it was not toward him as it was before.

  19. Genesis 31:3

Then GOD said to Jacob, “Return to your ancestors’ land—where you were born—and I will be with you.”

    Targum Onkelos

Adonoy said to Yaakov, Return to the land of your fathers and to your birthplace, and I will be with you [My Word will be your support].

  20. Genesis 31:4

Jacob had Rachel and Leah called to the field, where his flock was,

    Targum Onkelos

Yaakov sent and called Rochel and Leah to [come to] the field, to his flock.

  21. Genesis 31:5

and said to them, “I see that your father’s manner toward me is not as it has been in the past. But the God of my father has been with me.

    Targum Onkelos

He said to them, I saw [the expression of] your father’s face; it is not toward me as it was before, but the God of my father was with me [my support].

  22. Genesis 31:6

    וְאַתֵּנָה יְדַעְתֶּן כִּי בְּכׇל־כֹּחִי עָבַדְתִּי אֶת־אֲבִיכֶן׃

    As you know, I have served your father with all my might;

    Targum Onkelos

    וְאַתִּין יְדַעְתִּין אֲרֵי בְּכָל חֵילִי פְּלַחִית יָת אֲבוּכוֹן׃

You know that I served your father with all my strength.

  23. Genesis 31:7

but your father has cheated me, changing my wages time and again. God, however, would not let him do me harm.

    Targum Onkelos

Your father cheated me and changed my wage ten countings; but Elohim did not let him harm me.

  24. Genesis 31:8

If he said thus, ‘The speckled shall be your wages,’ then all the flocks would drop speckled young; and if he said thus, ‘The streaked shall be your wages,’ then all the flocks would drop streaked young.

    Targum Onkelos

If he would say, The speckled will be your wage, then all the flock [sheep] gave birth to speckled ones. If he would say, Ringed ones will be your wage, all the flock [sheep] gave birth to ringed ones.

  25. Genesis 31:9

God has taken away your father’s livestock and given it to me.

    Targum Onkelos

Thus God delivered [separated] your father’s livestock, and gave it to me.

  26. Genesis 31:10

“Once, at the mating time of the flocks, I had a dream in which I saw that the he-goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled, and mottled.

    Targum Onkelos

At the time the flock [sheep] were in heat [to mate], I lifted my eyes, and in a dream I saw that the males [rams] going upon the flock [sheep] were ringed, speckled and striped.

  27. Genesis 31:11

An angel of Elohim said to me in a dream, Yaakov, and I said, Here I am.

  28. Genesis 31:12

And the angel said, ‘Note well that all the he-goats that are mating with the flock are streaked, speckled, and mottled; for I have noted all that Laban has been doing to you.

    Targum Onkelos

He said, Lift up your eyes [now] and see, all the males [rams] going up on the flock [sheep] are ringed, speckled, and striped; for I have seen all that Lavan is doing to you [is revealed before Me].

  29. Genesis 31:13

I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and where you made a vow to Me. Now, arise and leave this land and return to your native land.’”

    Targum Onkelos

I am the Almighty of Elohim who appeared to you in Beis Eil, where you anointed a monument, where you made a vow to [before] Me. Now arise and leave this land, and return to the land of your birthplace.

  30. Genesis 31:14

Then Rachel and Leah answered him, saying, “Have we still a share in the inheritance of our father’s house?

    Targum Onkelos

Rochel and Leah replied and said to him, Do we still have a portion and an inheritance in our father’s house?

  31. Genesis 31:15

Surely, he regards us as outsiders, now that he has sold us and has used up our purchase price.

    Targum Onkelos

Are we not considered by him as strangers? For he has sold us, and has completely consumed our money.

  32. Genesis 31:16

Truly, all the wealth that God has taken away from our father belongs to us and to our children. Now then, do just as God has told you.”

    Targum Onkelos

All the wealth that Elohim rescued [separated] from our father belongs to us and our children. Now, whatever God has said to you, do it.
