  1. Exodus 9:17

Yet you continue to thwart My people, and do not let them go!

    Targum Onkelos

But you are still oppressing My people refusing to send them out.

  2. Exodus 9:18

This time tomorrow I will rain down a very heavy hail, such as has not been in Egypt from the day it was founded until now.

    Targum Onkelos

Tomorrow at this time, I will cause it to rain [down] a tremendously heavy hail. There was never anything like it in Egypt, from the time it was founded until now.

  3. Exodus 9:19

Therefore, order your livestock and everything you have in the open brought under shelter; every human and animal that is found outside, not having been brought indoors, shall perish when the hail comes down upon them!’”

    Targum Onkelos

Now send [word] and gather [shelter] your livestock and all that you have in the field. Any man or beast that is found [remains] in the field and will not be brought into the house [indoors]—the hail will descend upon them and they will die.”

  4. Exodus 9:20

    הַיָּרֵא אֶת־דְּבַר יְהֹוָה מֵעַבְדֵי פַּרְעֹה הֵנִיס אֶת־עֲבָדָיו וְאֶת־מִקְנֵהוּ אֶל־הַבָּתִּים׃

    Those among Pharaoh’s courtiers who feared GOD’s word brought their slaves and livestock indoors to safety;

    Targum Onkelos

    דְּדָחֵיל מִפִּתְגָמָא דַּייָ מֵעַבְדֵי פַרְעֹה כְּנַשׁ יָת עַבְדּוֹהִי וְיָת בִּעִירֵיהּ לְבָתַּיָּא׃

He that feared the word of Adonoy among Pharaoh’s servants, made [gathered] his servants and his livestock flee into the houses [indoors].

  5. Exodus 9:21

but those who paid no regard to the word of GOD left their slaves and livestock in the open.

    Targum Onkelos

But he whose heart did not heed the word of Adonoy, left his servants and his livestock in the field.

  6. Exodus 9:22

GOD said to Moses, “Hold out your arm toward the sky that hail may fall on all the land of Egypt, upon human and animal and all the grasses of the field in the land of Egypt.”

    Targum Onkelos

Adonoy said to Moshe, “Extend your hand toward the heavens, and there will be hail throughout the land of Egypt—on man and on beast, and upon all the vegetation in the land of Egypt.”

  7. Exodus 9:23

So Moses held out his rod toward the sky, and GOD sent thunder and hail, and fire streamed down to the ground, as GOD rained down hail upon the land of Egypt.

    Targum Onkelos

Moshe extended his rod toward the heavens, and Adonoy sent thunder and hail, and fire came streaming down upon the earth. Adonoy caused it to rain hail on the land of Egypt.

  8. Exodus 9:24

The hail was very heavy—fire flashing in the midst of the hail—such as had not fallen on the land of Egypt since it had become a nation.

    Targum Onkelos

There was hail and fire [lightning] flashing among the hailstones. It was an extremely heavy [downfall]. There had never been anything like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.

  9. Exodus 9:25

Throughout the land of Egypt the hail struck down all that were in the open, both human and animal; the hail also struck down all the grasses of the field and shattered all the trees of the field.

    Targum Onkelos

The hail struck throughout the whole land of Egypt, [killing] all that was in the field [outdoors]—both man and beast. All the vegetation in the fields was struck by the hail and every tree in the fields was shattered.

  10. Exodus 9:26

Only in the region of Goshen, where the Israelites were, there was no hail.

    Targum Onkelos

Only in the land of Goshen where the B’nei Yisrael were, there was no hail.

  11. Exodus 9:27

Thereupon Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron and said to them, “I stand guilty this time. GOD is in the right, and I and my people are in the wrong.

    Targum Onkelos

Pharaoh sent, and called for Moshe and Aharon, and he said to them, “This time I have sinned. Adonoy is the righteous One and I and my people are the sinners.

  12. Exodus 9:28

Plead with GOD that there may be an end of this thunder and of hail. I will let you go; you need stay no longer.”

    Targum Onkelos

Pray to [before] Adonoy [for there is much relief before Him, so that there will be no thunders of anger like these upon us from before God, nor hail.] There has been enough of God’s thunder and hail. I will send you out without further delay.”

  13. Exodus 9:29

Moses said to him, “As I go out of the city, I shall spread out my hands to GOD; the thunder will cease and the hail will fall no more, so that you may know that the earth is GOD’s.

    Targum Onkelos

Moshe said to him, “When I leave the city, I will spread my hands [in prayer] to [before] Adonoy. The thunder will cease and their will be no more hail, so that you will know that the earth belongs to Adonoy.

  14. Exodus 9:30

But I know that you and your courtiers do not yet fear the ETERNAL God.”—

    Targum Onkelos

But regarding you and your servants, I know that you are not yet in fear of [humbled from before] Adonoy, Elohim.

  15. Exodus 9:31

    וְהַפִּשְׁתָּה וְהַשְּׂעֹרָה נֻכָּתָה כִּי הַשְּׂעֹרָה אָבִיב וְהַפִּשְׁתָּה גִּבְעֹל׃

    Now the flax and barley were ruined, for the barley was in the ear and the flax was in bud;

    Targum Onkelos

    וְכִתָּנָא וּסְעָרֵי לְקוֹ אֲרֵי סְעָרַיָּא אֲבִיב וְכִתָּנָא גַּבְעוּלִּין׃

The flax and barley have been broken since the barley was ripe, and the flax had formed into stalks.

  16. Exodus 9:32

but the wheat and the emmer were not hurt, for they ripen late.—

    Targum Onkelos

But neither the wheat or the spelt were broken since they are late in sprouting.”

  17. Exodus 9:33

Leaving Pharaoh, Moses went outside the city and spread out his hands to GOD: the thunder and the hail ceased, and no rain came pouring down upon the earth.

    Targum Onkelos

Moshe [then] left Pharaoh’s presence, and left the city. He spread his hands [in prayer] to [before] Adonoy. The thunder ceased, and the hail and the rain [which had descended] did not reach the earth.

  18. Exodus 9:34

But when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunder had ceased, he became stubborn and reverted to his guilty ways, as did his courtiers.

    Targum Onkelos

[When] Pharaoh saw that the rain, and the hail and the thunder ceased, he continued his sin[ful ways]. He and his servants hardened their hearts.

  19. Exodus 9:35

So Pharaoh’s heart stiffened and he would not let the Israelites go, just as GOD had foretold through Moses.

    Targum Onkelos

Pharaoh’s heart was strengthened, and he did not send the B’nei Yisrael out. This was just as Adonoy had spoken through Moshe.
