  1. Deuteronomy 29:9

You stand this day, all of you, before the ETERNAL your God: your tribal heads, your elders, and your officials—the entire body of Israel—

    Targum Onkelos

‘‘You stand, this day all of you before Adonoy, your God; your tribal chieftains, your elders and your law officers, every man of Yisroel.

  2. Deuteronomy 29:10

your children, your wives, even the stranger within your camp, from woodchopper to waterdrawer,

    Targum Onkelos

Your young, your wives, and your convert who is within your camps; from your wood cutters to the water drawers.

  3. Deuteronomy 29:11

    לְעׇבְרְךָ בִּבְרִית יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ וּבְאָלָתוֹ אֲשֶׁר יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ כֹּרֵת עִמְּךָ הַיּוֹם׃

    to enter into the covenant of the ETERNAL your God, which the ETERNAL your God is concluding with you this day, with its sanctions;

    Targum Onkelos

    לְאַעָלוּתָךְ בִּקְיָמָא דַּייָ אֱלָהָךְ וּבְמוֹמָתֵיהּ דַּייָ אֱלָהָךְ גָּזַר עִמָּךְ יוֹמָא דֵין׃

For your passage into the covenant of Adonoy, your God, and His oath-curse, that Adonoy, your God, is making with you today.

  4. Deuteronomy 29:12

in order to establish you this day as God’s people and in order to be your God, as promised you and as sworn to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

    Targum Onkelos

In order to sustain you today [before Him] as His people, and He will be for you a God as He promished you and as He promised your forefathers Avrohom, Yitzchok, and Yaakov.

  5. Deuteronomy 29:13

I make this covenant, with its sanctions, not with you alone,

    Targum Onkelos

And not with you alone am I making this covenant and this oath-curse.

  6. Deuteronomy 29:14

but both with those who are standing here with us this day before the ETERNAL our God and with those who are not with us here this day.

    Targum Onkelos

But with whoever is here with us standing today in the presence of Adonoy, our God, and with those who are not here with us today.

  7. Deuteronomy 29:15

    כִּי־אַתֶּם יְדַעְתֶּם אֵת אֲשֶׁר־יָשַׁבְנוּ בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם וְאֵת אֲשֶׁר־עָבַרְנוּ בְּקֶרֶב הַגּוֹיִם אֲשֶׁר עֲבַרְתֶּם׃

    Well you know that we dwelt in the land of Egypt and that we passed through the midst of various other nations;

    Targum Onkelos

    אֲרֵי אַתּוּן יְדַעְתּוּן יָת דִּיתֵיבְנָא בְּאַרְעָא דְּמִצְרָיִם וְיָת דַּעֲבַרְנָא בֵּינֵי עַמְמַיָּא דַּעֲבַרְתּוּן׃

For you are aware how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we passed through the nations whom you passed through.

  8. Deuteronomy 29:16

and you have seen the detestable things and the fetishes of wood and stone, silver and gold, that they keep.

    Targum Onkelos

Where you observed their abominations and their loathsomeness [idols], wood and stone, silver and gold, that they owned.

  9. Deuteronomy 29:17

Perchance there is among you some man or woman, or some clan or tribe, whose heart is even now turning away from the ETERNAL our God to go and worship the gods of those nations—perchance there is among you a stock sprouting poison weed and wormwood.

    Targum Onkelos

Perhaps there is among you a man or a woman or a family [offspring] or a tribe whose thoughts stray today from [being] with [the fear of] Adonoy, our God, to go serve the gods [idols] of those nations; lest there is within you a root producing gall and bitter fruit [a man who imagines sin or evil].

  10. Deuteronomy 29:18

When hearing the words of these sanctions, they may imagine a special immunity, thinking, “I shall be safe, though I follow my own willful heart”—to the utter ruin of moist and dry alike.

    Targum Onkelos

When he hears the statements of this oath-curse, he will imagine self-blessings [think to himself], saying, ‘‘Peace will be my lot when I shall follow what my thoughts envision,’’ so that the unintentional may be added to the sinful [I will add unintentional sins to the intentional].

  11. Deuteronomy 29:19

GOD will never forgive them. Rather, GOD’s anger and passion will rage against them, till every sanction recorded in this book comes down upon them, and GOD blots out their name from under heaven.

    Targum Onkelos

Adonoy will be unwilling to forgive him, because then Adonoy’s nostrils will fume [anger will be aroused] and His vengeful fury will enflame against [cleave to] that man, and there will cling to him the entire oath-curse written in this book; and Adonoy will eliminate his name from beneath the sky.

  12. Deuteronomy 29:20

[As for such a clan or tribe,] GOD will single it out from all the tribes of Israel for misfortune, in accordance with all the sanctions of the covenant recorded in this book of Teaching.

    Targum Onkelos

And Adonoy will seperate him for harm from all the tribes of Yisroel, in accord with all the oath-curses of the covenant inscribed in this Torah scroll.

  13. Deuteronomy 29:21

And later generations will ask—the children who succeed you, and foreigners who come from distant lands and see the plagues and diseases that GOD has inflicted upon that land,

    Targum Onkelos

The latter generation will say—your children who will arise after you and the stranger [foreign alien] who will come from a distant land; and they will see the plagues of that land and its illnesses that Adonoy has harmed it with.

  14. Deuteronomy 29:22

all its soil devastated by sulfur and salt, beyond sowing and producing, no grass growing in it, just like the upheaval of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which GOD overthrew in fierce anger—

    Targum Onkelos

Sulfur and salt, all its land, will be burnt, it will not be seeded, and it will not sprout, and no grass will grow there; like the overturning of Sodom and Amoroh, Admoh and Tzevoyim, which Adonoy overturned in His anger and His wrath.

  15. Deuteronomy 29:23

all nations will ask, “Why did GOD do thus to this land? Wherefore that awful wrath?”

    Targum Onkelos

And all the nations will say, ‘‘For what did Adonoy do so to this land? Why the vigor of this great [aroused] anger?’’

  16. Deuteronomy 29:24

    וְאָמְרוּ עַל אֲשֶׁר עָזְבוּ אֶת־בְּרִית יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵי אֲבֹתָם אֲשֶׁר כָּרַת עִמָּם בְּהוֹצִיאוֹ אֹתָם מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם׃

    They will be told, “Because they forsook the covenant that the ETERNAL, God of their ancestors, made with them upon freeing them from the land of Egypt;

    Targum Onkelos

    וְיֵימְרוּן עַל דִּשְׁבַקוּ יָת קְיָמָא דַּייָ אֱלָהָא דַּאֲבָהָתְהוֹן דִּגְזַר עִמְּהוֹן בְּאַפָּקוּתֵיהּ יָתְהוֹן מֵאַרְעָא דְּמִצְרָיִם׃

And they will reply, ‘‘Because they forsook the covenant of Adonoy, the God of their forefathers, which He made with them when He took them out of the land of Egypt.

  17. Deuteronomy 29:25

they turned to the service of other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they had not experienced and who had not been allotted to them.

    Targum Onkelos

And they went and served other gods and prostrated themselves to them; gods unknown to them and [which] He had not apportioned to them.

  18. Deuteronomy 29:26

So GOD was incensed at that land and brought upon it all the curses recorded in this book.

    Targum Onkelos

And Adonoy became furious with that land, [causing Him] to bring on it the entire curse written in this book.

  19. Deuteronomy 29:27

GOD uprooted them from their soil in anger, fury, and great wrath, and cast them into another land, as is still the case.”

    Targum Onkelos

And Adonoy forced them away from their land with anger and wrath and great fury [aroused anger]; and He cast [exile] them into another land like this day.

  20. Deuteronomy 29:28

Concealed acts concern the ETERNAL our God; but with overt acts, it is for us and our children ever to apply all the provisions of this Teaching.

    Targum Onkelos

The hidden [matters] are Adonoy’s, our God’s, and the revealed [matters] are ours and our children’s forever, to perform all the statements of this Torah.
