- Numbers 34:16
וַיְדַבֵּר יְהֹוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר׃
GOD spoke to Moses, saying:
Targum Onkelos
וּמַלֵּיל יְיָ עִם מֹשֶׁה לְמֵימַר׃
Adonoy spoke to Moshe, saying:
- Numbers 34:17
אֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת הָאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר־יִנְחֲלוּ לָכֶם אֶת־הָאָרֶץ אֶלְעָזָר הַכֹּהֵן וִיהוֹשֻׁעַ בִּן־נוּן׃
These are the names of the men through whom the land shall be apportioned for you: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun.
Targum Onkelos
אִלֵּין שְׁמָהָת גּוּבְרַיָּא דְּיַחְסְנוּן לְכוֹן יָת אַרְעָא אֶלְעָזָר כָּהֲנָא וִיהוֹשֻעַ בַּר נוּן׃
“These are the names of the men who shall inherit the land for you: Elozor the kohein and Yehoshua son of Nun,
- Numbers 34:18
וְנָשִׂיא אֶחָד נָשִׂיא אֶחָד מִמַּטֶּה תִּקְחוּ לִנְחֹל אֶת־הָאָרֶץ׃
You shall also take a chieftain from each tribe through whom the land shall be apportioned;
Targum Onkelos
וְרַבָּא חַד רַבָּא חַד מִשִּׁבְטָא תִּדְבְּרוּן לְאַחְסָנָא יָת אַרְעָא׃
And one leader from each tribe you shall take, to help inherit the land.
- Numbers 34:19
וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת הָאֲנָשִׁים לְמַטֵּה יְהוּדָה כָּלֵב בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּה׃
and these are their names: From the tribe of Judah: Caleb son of Jephunneh.
Targum Onkelos
וְאִלֵּין שְׁמָהָת גּוּבְרַיָּא לְשִׁבְטָא דִּיהוּדָה כָּלֵב בַּר יְפֻנֶּה׃
These are the names of the men: for the tribe of Yehudah, Kaleiv son of Yefuneh.

וּלְמַטֵּה בְּנֵי שִׁמְעוֹן שְׁמוּאֵל בֶּן־עַמִּיהוּד׃
From the Simeonite tribe: Samuel son of Ammihud.
Targum Onkelos
וּלְשִׁבְטָא דִּבְנֵי שִׁמְעוֹן שְׁמוּאֵל בַּר עַמִּיהוּד׃
For the tribe of Shimon, Shmuel, son of Amihud.
- Numbers 34:21
לְמַטֵּה בִנְיָמִן אֱלִידָד בֶּן־כִּסְלוֹן׃
From the tribe of Benjamin: Elidad son of Chislon.
Targum Onkelos
לְשִׁבְטָא דְּבִנְיָמִין אֱלִידָד בַּר כִּסְלוֹן׃
For the tribe of Binyamin, Elidad, son of Kislon.

וּלְמַטֵּה בְנֵי־דָן נָשִׂיא בֻּקִּי בֶּן־יׇגְלִי׃
From the Danite tribe: a chieftain, Bukki son of Jogli.

וּלְשִׁבְטָא דִּבְנֵי דָּן רַבָּא בֻּקִּי בַּר יָגְלִי׃
The leader for the tribe of Don, Buki, son of Yogli.

לִבְנֵי יוֹסֵף לְמַטֵּה בְנֵי־מְנַשֶּׁה נָשִׂיא חַנִּיאֵל בֶּן־אֵפֹד׃
For the descendants of Joseph: from the Manassite tribe: a chieftain, Hanniel son of Ephod;

לִבְנֵי יוֹסֵף לְשִׁבְטָא דִּבְנֵי מְנַשֶּׁה רַבָּא חַנִּיאֵל בַּר אֵפוֹד׃
For Yoseif’s children, the leader for the tribe of Menashe, Chaniel, son of Eifod.

וּלְמַטֵּה בְנֵי־אֶפְרַיִם נָשִׂיא קְמוּאֵל בֶּן־שִׁפְטָן׃
and from the Ephraimite tribe: a chieftain, Kemuel son of Shiphtan.

וּלְשִׁבְטָא דִּבְנֵי אֶפְרַיִם רַבָּא קְמוּאֵל בַּר שִׁפְטָן׃
The leader for the tribe of Ephraim, Kemuel, son of Shiftan.

וּלְמַטֵּה בְנֵי־זְבוּלֻן נָשִׂיא אֱלִיצָפָן בֶּן־פַּרְנָךְ׃
From the Zebulunite tribe: a chieftain, Elizaphan son of Parnach.

וּלְשִׁבְטָא דִּבְנֵי זְבוּלוּן רַבָּא אֱלִיצָפָן בַּר פַּרְנָךְ׃
The leader for the tribe of Zevulun, Elitzafan, son of Parnach.

וּלְמַטֵּה בְנֵי־יִשָּׂשכָר נָשִׂיא פַּלְטִיאֵל בֶּן־עַזָּן׃
From the Issacharite tribe: a chieftain, Paltiel son of Azzan.

וּלְשִׁבְטָא דִּבְנֵי יִשָּׂשכָר רַבָּא פַּלְטִיאֵל בַּר עַזָּן׃
The leader for the tribe of Yissachar, Paltiel, son of Azan.

וּלְמַטֵּה בְנֵי־אָשֵׁר נָשִׂיא אֲחִיהוּד בֶּן־שְׁלֹמִי׃
From the Asherite tribe: a chieftain, Ahihud son of Shelomi.

The leader for the tribe of Asher, Achihud, son of Shlomi.

וּלְמַטֵּה בְנֵי־נַפְתָּלִי נָשִׂיא פְּדַהְאֵל בֶּן־עַמִּיהוּד׃
From the Naphtalite tribe: a chieftain, Pedahel son of Ammihud.

וּלְשִׁבְטָא דִּבְנֵי נַפְתָּלִי רַבָּא פְּדַהְאֵל בַּר עַמִּיהוּד׃
The leader for the tribe of Naftali, Pedah’eil, son of Amihud.”

אֵלֶּה אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהֹוָה לְנַחֵל אֶת־בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן׃
It was these whom GOD designated to allot portions to the Israelites in the land of Canaan.
Targum Onkelos
אִלֵּין דְּפַקֵּיד יְיָ לְאַחְסָנָא יָת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּאַרְעָא דִּכְנָעַן׃
These are the ones whom Adonoy commanded to apportion the inheritance to Bnei Yisroel, in the land of Canaan.
- Numbers 35:1
וַיְדַבֵּר יְהֹוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה בְּעַרְבֹת מוֹאָב עַל־יַרְדֵּן יְרֵחוֹ לֵאמֹר׃
GOD spoke to Moses in the steppes of Moab at the Jordan near Jericho, saying:
Targum Onkelos
וּמַלֵּיל יְיָ עִם מֹשֶׁה בְּמֵישְׁרַיָּא דְּמוֹאָב עַל יַרְדְּנָא דִּירִיחוֹ לְמֵימַר׃
Adonoy spoke to Moshe in the plains of Moav by the Yardein near Yereicho, saying:
- Numbers 35:2
צַו אֶת־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְנָתְנוּ לַלְוִיִּם מִנַּחֲלַת אֲחֻזָּתָם עָרִים לָשָׁבֶת וּמִגְרָשׁ לֶעָרִים סְבִיבֹתֵיהֶם תִּתְּנוּ לַלְוִיִּם׃
Instruct the Israelite people to assign, out of the holdings apportioned to them, towns for the Levites to dwell in; you shall also assign to the Levites pasture land around their towns.
Targum Onkelos
פַּקֵּיד יָת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְיִתְּנוּן לְלֵיוָאֵי מֵאַחְסָנַת אֲחֻדַּתְהוֹן קִרְוִין לְמִתַּב וְרֶוַח לְקִרְוַיָּא סַחְרָנֵיהוֹן תִּתְּנוּן לְלֵיוָאֵי׃
“Instruct Bnei Yisroel and have them give to the Levites from their hereditary possession, cities in which to settle; and open space for the cities all around you shall give to the Levites.
- Numbers 35:3
וְהָיוּ הֶעָרִים לָהֶם לָשָׁבֶת וּמִגְרְשֵׁיהֶם יִהְיוּ לִבְהֶמְתָּם וְלִרְכֻשָׁם וּלְכֹל חַיָּתָם׃
The towns shall be theirs to dwell in, and the pasture shall be for the cattle they own and all their other animals.
Targum Onkelos
וִיהוֹן קִרְוַיָּא לְהוֹן לְמִתַּב וְרַוְחֵיהוֹן יְהוֹן לִבְעִירְהוֹן וּלְקִנְיָנְהוֹן וּלְכֹל חֵיוַתְהוֹן׃
These cities shall be theirs for dwelling, and their open space shall be for their animals, their property and all of their necessities to live.
- Numbers 35:4
וּמִגְרְשֵׁי הֶעָרִים אֲשֶׁר תִּתְּנוּ לַלְוִיִּם מִקִּיר הָעִיר וָחוּצָה אֶלֶף אַמָּה סָבִיב׃
The town pasture that you are to assign to the Levites shall extend a thousand cubits outside the town wall all around.
Targum Onkelos
וְרַוְחֵי קִרְוַיָּא דְּתִתְּנוֹן לְלֵיוָאֵי מִכּוֹתֶל קַרְתָּא וּלְבָרָא אֶלֶף אַמִּין סְחוֹר סְחוֹר׃
The open space for the cities that you shall give the Levites [shall extend] from the walls of the city and outward a thousand amo¯s all around.
- Numbers 35:5
וּמַדֹּתֶם מִחוּץ לָעִיר אֶת־פְּאַת־קֵדְמָה אַלְפַּיִם בָּאַמָּה וְאֶת־פְּאַת־נֶגֶב אַלְפַּיִם בָּאַמָּה וְאֶת־פְּאַת־יָם ׀ אַלְפַּיִם בָּאַמָּה וְאֵת פְּאַת צָפוֹן אַלְפַּיִם בָּאַמָּה וְהָעִיר בַּתָּוֶךְ זֶה יִהְיֶה לָהֶם מִגְרְשֵׁי הֶעָרִים׃
You shall measure off two thousand cubits outside the town on the east side, two thousand on the south side, two thousand on the west side, and two thousand on the north side, with the town in the center. That shall be the pasture for their towns.
Targum Onkelos
וְתִמְשְׁחוּן מִבַּרָא לְקַרְתָּא יָת רוּחַ קִדּוּמָא תְּרֵין אַלְפִין אַמִּין וְיָת רוּחַ דָּרוֹמָא תְּרֵין אַלְפִין אַמִּין וְיָת רוּחַ מַעְרְבָא תְּרֵין אַלְפִין אַמִּין וְיָת רוּחַ צִפּוּנָא תְּרֵין אַלְפִין אַמִּין וְקַרְתָּא בִּמְצִיעַ דֵּין יְהֵי לְהוֹן רַוְחֵי קִרְוַיָּא׃
You shall measure from outside the city two thousand amo¯s on the eastern side, two thousand amo¯s on the southern side, two thousand amo¯s on the western side, and two thousand amo¯s on the northern side; with the city in the center. This shall be the open spaces for the cities.
- Numbers 35:6
וְאֵת הֶעָרִים אֲשֶׁר תִּתְּנוּ לַלְוִיִּם אֵת שֵׁשׁ־עָרֵי הַמִּקְלָט אֲשֶׁר תִּתְּנוּ לָנֻס שָׁמָּה הָרֹצֵחַ וַעֲלֵיהֶם תִּתְּנוּ אַרְבָּעִים וּשְׁתַּיִם עִיר׃
The towns that you assign to the Levites shall comprise the six cities of refuge that you are to designate for a manslayer to flee to, to which you shall add forty-two towns.
Targum Onkelos
וְיָת קִרְוַיָּא דְּתִתְּנוּן לְלֵיוָאֵי יָת שֵׁית קִרְוֵי שֵׁיזָבוּתָא דְּתִתְּנוּן לְמִעְרַק לְתַמָּן קָטוֹלָא וַעֲלֵיהוֹן תִּתְּנוּן אַרְבְּעִין וְתַרְתֵּין קִרְוִין׃
Along with the cities that you shall give the Levites shall be the six refuge cities which you shall provide [as places] for a murderer to flee; and in addition to them, you shall provide forty-two cities.
- Numbers 35:7
כׇּל־הֶעָרִים אֲשֶׁר תִּתְּנוּ לַלְוִיִּם אַרְבָּעִים וּשְׁמֹנֶה עִיר אֶתְהֶן וְאֶת־מִגְרְשֵׁיהֶן׃
Thus the total of the towns that you assign to the Levites shall be forty-eight towns, with their pasture.
Targum Onkelos
כָּל קִרְוַיָּא דְּתִתְּנוּן לְלֵיוָאֵי אַרְבְּעִין וְתַמְנֵי קִרְוִין יָתְהוֹן וְיָת רַוְחֵיהוֹן׃
The total number of cities that you shall give to the Levites is forty eight cities, with their open spaces.
- Numbers 35:8
וְהֶעָרִים אֲשֶׁר תִּתְּנוּ מֵאֲחֻזַּת בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל מֵאֵת הָרַב תַּרְבּוּ וּמֵאֵת הַמְעַט תַּמְעִיטוּ אִישׁ כְּפִי נַחֲלָתוֹ אֲשֶׁר יִנְחָלוּ יִתֵּן מֵעָרָיו לַלְוִיִּם׃
In assigning towns from the holdings of the Israelites, take more from the larger groups and less from the smaller, so that each assigns towns to the Levites in proportion to the share it receives.
Targum Onkelos
וְקִרְוַיָּא דְּתִתְּנוּן מֵאֲחֻדַּת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִן סַגִּיאֵי תַּסְגּוֹן וּמִן זְעֵירֵי תַּזְעֲרוּן גְּבַר כְּפוֹם אַחְסָנְתֵיהּ דְּיַחְסְנוּן יִתֵּין מִקִּרְווֹהִי לְלֵיוָאֵי׃
The cities that you shall give, [shall be] from the possession of Bnei Yisroel; take more from a larger [holding], and less from a smaller [holding], each person, according to his inheritance, shall give of his cities to the Levites.”
