- Numbers 33:50
וַיְדַבֵּר יְהֹוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה בְּעַרְבֹת מוֹאָב עַל־יַרְדֵּן יְרֵחוֹ לֵאמֹר׃
In the steppes of Moab, at the Jordan near Jericho, GOD spoke to Moses, saying:
Targum Onkelos
וּמַלֵּיל יְיָ עִם מֹשֶׁה בְּמֵישְׁרַיָּא דְּמוֹאָב עַל יַרְדְּנָא דִּירִיחוֹ לְמֵימַר׃
Adonoy spoke to Moshe in the plains of Moav along the Yardein [near] Yereicho, saying:
- Numbers 33:51
דַּבֵּר אֶל־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאָמַרְתָּ אֲלֵהֶם כִּי אַתֶּם עֹבְרִים אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּן אֶל־אֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן׃
Speak to the Israelite people and say to them: When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan,
Targum Onkelos
מַלֵּיל עִם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְתֵימַר לְהוֹן אֲרֵי אַתּוּן עָבְרִין יָת יַרְדְּנָא לְאַרְעָא דִּכְנָעַן׃
“Speak to Bnei Yisroel and say to them: ‘When you cross the Yardein to the land of Canaan,
- Numbers 33:52
וְהוֹרַשְׁתֶּם אֶת־כׇּל־יֹשְׁבֵי הָאָרֶץ מִפְּנֵיכֶם וְאִבַּדְתֶּם אֵת כׇּל־מַשְׂכִּיֹּתָם וְאֵת כׇּל־צַלְמֵי מַסֵּכֹתָם תְּאַבֵּדוּ וְאֵת כׇּל־בָּמוֹתָם תַּשְׁמִידוּ׃
you shall dispossess all the inhabitants of the land; you shall destroy all their figured objects; you shall destroy all their molten images, and you shall demolish all their cult places.
Targum Onkelos
וּתְתָרְכוּן יָת כָּל יָתְבֵי אַרְעָא מִן קֳדָמֵיכוֹן וְתַבְּדוּן יָת כָּל בֵּית סִגְדַּתְהוֹן וְיָת כָּל צַלְמֵי מַתְּכָתְהוֹן תַּבְּדוּן וְיָת כָּל בָּמָתְהוֹן תְּשֵׁיצוֹן׃
you must drive out all of the inhabitants of the land before you. You must destroy all their carved stones, and demolish all their cast metal idols and tear down all their altars.
- Numbers 33:53
וְהוֹרַשְׁתֶּם אֶת־הָאָרֶץ וִישַׁבְתֶּם־בָּהּ כִּי לָכֶם נָתַתִּי אֶת־הָאָרֶץ לָרֶשֶׁת אֹתָהּ׃
And you shall take possession of the land and settle in it, for I have assigned the land to you to possess.
Targum Onkelos
וּתְתָרְכוּן יָת יָתְבֵי אַרְעָא וְתִתְּבוּן בַּהּ אֲרֵי לְכוֹן יְהַבִית יָת אַרְעָא לְמֵירַת יָתַהּ׃
Drive out [the inhabitants of] the land and settle in it, because I have given this land to you to possess.
- Numbers 33:54
וְהִתְנַחַלְתֶּם אֶת־הָאָרֶץ בְּגוֹרָל לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתֵיכֶם לָרַב תַּרְבּוּ אֶת־נַחֲלָתוֹ וְלַמְעַט תַּמְעִיט אֶת־נַחֲלָתוֹ אֶל אֲשֶׁר־יֵצֵא לוֹ שָׁמָּה הַגּוֹרָל לוֹ יִהְיֶה לְמַטּוֹת אֲבֹתֵיכֶם תִּתְנֶחָלוּ׃
You shall apportion the land among yourselves by lot, clan by clan: with larger groups increase the share, with smaller groups reduce the share. Wherever the lot falls for it, that shall be its location. You shall have your portions according to your ancestral tribes.
Targum Onkelos
וְתַחְסְנוּן יָת אַרְעָא בְּעַדְבָּא לְזַרְעֲיָתְכוֹן לְסַגִּיאֵי תַּסְגּוֹן יָת אַחְסָנַתְהוֹן וְלִזְעֵירֵי תַּזְעֲרוּן יָת אַחְסָנַתְהוֹן לִדְיִפּוֹק לֵיהּ תַּמָּן עַדְבָּא דִּילֵיהּ יְהֵי לְשִׁבְטֵי אֲבָהָתְכוֹן תַּחְסְנוּן׃
You shall give the land as an inheritance to your families by means of a lottery; to the large [family] you shall increase its portion, to the small [family] you shall decrease its portion. To whomever the lottery [system] ordains, it shall be his; according to your paternal tribes shall you inherit.
- Numbers 33:55
וְאִם־לֹא תוֹרִישׁוּ אֶת־יֹשְׁבֵי הָאָרֶץ מִפְּנֵיכֶם וְהָיָה אֲשֶׁר תּוֹתִירוּ מֵהֶם לְשִׂכִּים בְּעֵינֵיכֶם וְלִצְנִינִם בְּצִדֵּיכֶם וְצָרְרוּ אֶתְכֶם עַל־הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם יֹשְׁבִים בָּהּ׃
But if you do not dispossess the inhabitants of the land, those whom you allow to remain shall be stings in your eyes and thorns in your sides, and they shall harass you in the land in which you live;
Targum Onkelos
וְאִם לָא תְתָרְכוּן יָת יָתְבֵי אַרְעָא מִן קֳדָמֵיכוֹן וִיהֵי דְּתַשְׁאֲרוּן מִנְּהוֹן לְסִיעָן נָטְלָן זֵין לְקִבְלְכוֹן וּלְמַשְׁרְיָן מַקְּפָנֵיכוֹן וִיעִיקוּן לְכוֹן עַל אַרְעָא דְּאַתּוּן יָתְבִין בַּהּ׃
But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land before you, those whom you will leave over will be spikes in your eyes and thorns in your sides [armed groups coming against you and battalions surrounding you], and they will persecute you upon the land in which you settle.
- Numbers 33:56
וְהָיָה כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּמִּיתִי לַעֲשׂוֹת לָהֶם אֶעֱשֶׂה לָכֶם׃
so that I will do to you what I planned to do to them.
Targum Onkelos
וִיהֵי כְּמָא דְּחַשֵּׁיבִית לְמֶעֱבַד לְהוֹן אַעֲבֵיד לְכוֹן׃
And it shall be that what I had intended to do to them I will do to you.’”
- Numbers 34:1
וַיְדַבֵּר יְהֹוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר׃
GOD spoke to Moses, saying:
Targum Onkelos
וּמַלֵּיל יְיָ עִם מֹשֶׁה לְמֵימַר׃
Adonoy spoke to Moshe, saying:
- Numbers 34:2
צַו אֶת־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאָמַרְתָּ אֲלֵהֶם כִּי־אַתֶּם בָּאִים אֶל־הָאָרֶץ כְּנָעַן זֹאת הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר תִּפֹּל לָכֶם בְּנַחֲלָה אֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן לִגְבֻלֹתֶיהָ׃
Instruct the Israelite people and say to them: When you enter the land of Canaan, this is the land that shall fall to you as your portion, the land of Canaan with its various boundaries:
Targum Onkelos
פַּקֵּיד יָת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְתֵימַר לְהוֹן אֲרֵי אַתּוּן עָאלִין לְאַרְעָא דִּכְנָעַן דָּא אַרְעָא דְּתִתְפְּלֵיג לְכוֹן בְּאַחְסָנָא אַרְעָא דִּכְנַעַן לִתְחוּמַהָא׃
“Instruct Bnei Yisroel and say to them: ‘When you come to the land of Canaan, this is the land which will fall to [divided for] you as hereditary property, the land of Canaan according to its borders.
- Numbers 34:3
וְהָיָה לָכֶם פְּאַת־נֶגֶב מִמִּדְבַּר־צִן עַל־יְדֵי אֱדוֹם וְהָיָה לָכֶם גְּבוּל נֶגֶב מִקְצֵה יָם־הַמֶּלַח קֵדְמָה׃
Your southern sector shall extend from the wilderness of Zin alongside Edom. Your southern boundary shall start on the east from the tip of the Dead Sea.
Targum Onkelos
וִיהֵי לְכוֹן רוּחַ דָּרוֹמָא מִמַּדְבְּרָא דְּצִין עַל תְּחוּמֵי אֱדוֹם וִיהֵי לְכוֹן תְּחוּם דָּרוֹמָא מִסְּיָפֵי יַמָּא דְּמִלְחָא קִדּוּמָא׃
Your southern flank shall be from the Tzin wilderness along [the land of] [the borders of] Edom; the southern border shall be from the edge of the Salt Sea to the east.
- Numbers 34:4
וְנָסַב לָכֶם הַגְּבוּל מִנֶּגֶב לְמַעֲלֵה עַקְרַבִּים וְעָבַר צִנָה (והיה) [וְהָיוּ] תּוֹצְאֹתָיו מִנֶּגֶב לְקָדֵשׁ בַּרְנֵעַ וְיָצָא חֲצַר־אַדָּר וְעָבַר עַצְמֹנָה׃
Your boundary shall then turn to pass south of the ascent of Akrabbim and continue to Zin, and its limits shall be south of Kadesh-barnea, reaching Hazar-addar and continuing to Azmon.
Targum Onkelos
וְיַסְחַר לְכוֹן תְּחוּמָא מִדָּרוֹמָא לְמַסְּקַנָא דְּעַקְרַבִּין וְיִעְבַּר לְצִין וִיהוֹן מַפְּקָנוֹהִי מִדָּרוֹמָא לִרְקַם גֵּיאָה וְיִפּוֹק לַחֲצַר אַדָּר וְיִעְבַּר לְעַצְמוֹן׃
The border then turns south of Maaleh [the heights of] Akrabim passing toward Tzin; and its outskirts shall be south of Kadeish Barne’a [Rekam Geyoh], and then it shall extend to Chatzar Adar and continue toward Atzmon.
- Numbers 34:5
וְנָסַב הַגְּבוּל מֵעַצְמוֹן נַחְלָה מִצְרָיִם וְהָיוּ תוֹצְאֹתָיו הַיָּמָּה׃
From Azmon the boundary shall turn toward the Wadi of Egypt and terminate at the Sea.
Targum Onkelos
וְיַסְחַר תְּחוּמָא מֵעַצְמוֹן לְנַחְלָא דְּמִצְרָיִם וִיהוֹן מַפְּקָנוֹהִי לְיַמָּא׃
The border turns from Atzmon toward the Egyptian Estuary and its outskirts shall reach the sea.
- Numbers 34:6
וּגְבוּל יָם וְהָיָה לָכֶם הַיָּם הַגָּדוֹל וּגְבוּל זֶה־יִהְיֶה לָכֶם גְּבוּל יָם׃
For the western boundary you shall have the coast of the Great Sea; that shall serve as your western boundary.
Targum Onkelos
וּתְחוּם מַעְרְבָא וִיהֵי לְכוֹן יַמָּא רַבָּא וּתְחוּמֵיהּ דֵּין יְהֵי לְכוֹן תְּחוּם מַעְרְבָא׃
As for the western border; it shall be the border of the Great Sea, this shall be your western border.
- Numbers 34:7
וְזֶה־יִהְיֶה לָכֶם גְּבוּל צָפוֹן מִן־הַיָּם הַגָּדֹל תְּתָאוּ לָכֶם הֹר הָהָר׃
This shall be your northern boundary: Draw a line from the Great Sea to Mount Hor;
Targum Onkelos
וְדֵין יְהֵי לְכוֹן תְּחוּם צִפּוּנָא מִן יַמָּא רַבָּא תְּכָוְנוּן לְכוֹן לְהוֹר טוּרָא׃
This shall be your northern border; from the Great Sea turn yourselves to Hor Hahar.
- Numbers 34:8
מֵהֹר הָהָר תְּתָאוּ לְבֹא חֲמָת וְהָיוּ תּוֹצְאֹת הַגְּבֻל צְדָדָה׃
from Mount Hor draw a line to Lebo-hamath, and let the boundary reach Zedad.
Targum Onkelos
מֵהוֹר טוּרָא תְּכָוְנוּן לְמָטֵי חֲמָת וִיהוֹן מַפְּקָנוֹהִי דִּתְחוּמָא לִצְדָד׃
From Hor Hahar turn to [direct yourselves toward] Levo Chamas and the outskirts of the border shall be toward Tzedad.
- Numbers 34:9
וְיָצָא הַגְּבֻל זִפְרֹנָה וְהָיוּ תוֹצְאֹתָיו חֲצַר עֵינָן זֶה־יִהְיֶה לָכֶם גְּבוּל צָפוֹן׃
The boundary shall then run to Ziphron and terminate at Hazar-enan. That shall be your northern boundary.
Targum Onkelos
וְיִפּוֹק תְּחוּמָא לְזִפְרוֹן וִיהוֹן מַפְּקָנוֹהִי לַחֲצַר עֵינָן דֵּין יְהֵי לְכוֹן תְּחוּם צִפּוּנָא׃
The border shall then extend toward Zifron, and its outskirts shall be at Chatzar Einan; this shall be your northern border.
- Numbers 34:10
וְהִתְאַוִּיתֶם לָכֶם לִגְבוּל קֵדְמָה מֵחֲצַר עֵינָן שְׁפָמָה׃
For your eastern boundary you shall draw a line from Hazar-enan to Shepham.
Targum Onkelos
וּתְכָוְנוּן לְכוֹן לִתְחוּם קִדּוּמָא מֵחֲצַר עֵינָן לִשְׁפָם׃
You shall turn yourselves toward the eastern border from Chatzar Einan to Shefam.
- Numbers 34:11
וְיָרַד הַגְּבֻל מִשְּׁפָם הָרִבְלָה מִקֶּדֶם לָעָיִן וְיָרַד הַגְּבֻל וּמָחָה עַל־כֶּתֶף יָם־כִּנֶּרֶת קֵדְמָה׃
From Shepham the boundary shall descend to Riblah on the east side of Ain; from there the boundary shall continue downward and abut on the eastern slopes of the Sea of Chinnereth.
Targum Onkelos
וְיֵיחוֹת תְּחוּמָא מִשְּׁפָם לְרִבְלָה מִמַּדְנַח לְעָיִן וְיֵיחוֹת תְּחוּמָא וְיִמְטֵי עַל כֵּיף יָם גִּנֵּיסַר קִדּוּמָא׃
The border shall then descend from Shefam to Rivlah to the east of Ayin; the border shall descend and contact the bank of the eastern shore of the Kineres Sea [of Ginesar].
- Numbers 34:12
וְיָרַד הַגְּבוּל הַיַּרְדֵּנָה וְהָיוּ תוֹצְאֹתָיו יָם הַמֶּלַח זֹאת תִּהְיֶה לָכֶם הָאָרֶץ לִגְבֻלֹתֶיהָ סָבִיב׃
The boundary shall then descend along the Jordan and terminate at the Dead Sea. That shall be your land as defined by its boundaries on all sides.
Targum Onkelos
וְיֵיחוֹת תְּחוּמָא לְיַרְדְּנָא וִיהוֹן מַפְּקָנוֹהִי לְיַמָּא דְּמִלְחָא דָּא תְּהֵי לְכוֹן אַרְעָא לִתְחוּמַהָא סְחוֹר סְחוֹר׃
The border shall then descend along the Yardein and its outskirts shall be the Salt (Dead) Sea. This should be your land according to its borders all around.’”
- Numbers 34:13
וַיְצַו מֹשֶׁה אֶת־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵאמֹר זֹאת הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר תִּתְנַחֲלוּ אֹתָהּ בְּגוֹרָל אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהֹוָה לָתֵת לְתִשְׁעַת הַמַּטּוֹת וַחֲצִי הַמַּטֶּה׃
Moses instructed the Israelites, saying: This is the land you are to receive by lot as your hereditary portion, which GOD has commanded to be given to the nine and a half tribes.
Targum Onkelos
וּפַקֵּיד מֹשֶׁה יָת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְמֵימַר דָּא אַרְעָא דְּתַחְסְנוּן יָתַהּ בְּעַדְבָּא דְּפַקֵּיד יְיָ לְמִתַּן לְתִשְׁעָא שִׁבְטִין וּפַלְגוּת שִׁבְטָא׃
Moshe instructed Bnei Yisroel, saying: “This is the land which you must distribute as hereditary property by means of a lottery, which Adonoy has commanded to give to the nine and one half tribes.
- Numbers 34:14
כִּי לָקְחוּ מַטֵּה בְנֵי הָראוּבֵנִי לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם וּמַטֵּה בְנֵי־הַגָּדִי לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם וַחֲצִי מַטֵּה מְנַשֶּׁה לָקְחוּ נַחֲלָתָם׃
For the Reubenite tribe by its ancestral houses, the Gadite tribe by its ancestral houses, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have already received their portions:
Targum Onkelos
אֲרֵי קַבִּילוּ שִׁבְטָא דִּבְנֵי רְאוּבֵן לְבֵית אֲבָהָתְהוֹן וְשִׁבְטָא דִּבְנֵי גָּד לְבֵית אֲבָהָתְהוֹן וּפַלְגוּת שִׁבְטָא דִּמְנַשֶּׁה קַבִּילוּ אַחְסָנַתְהוֹן׃
Because the tribe of Reuvein’s descendants, the tribe of Gad’s descendants, and half of the tribe of Menashe have already taken their hereditary property.
- Numbers 34:15
שְׁנֵי הַמַּטּוֹת וַחֲצִי הַמַּטֶּה לָקְחוּ נַחֲלָתָם מֵעֵבֶר לְיַרְדֵּן יְרֵחוֹ קֵדְמָה מִזְרָחָה׃
those two and a half tribes have received their portions across the Jordan, opposite Jericho, on the east, the orient side.
Targum Onkelos
תְּרֵין שִׁבְטִין וּפַלְגוּת שִׁבְטָא קַבִּילוּ אַחְסָנַתְהוֹן מֵעִבְרָא לְיַרְדְּנָא דִּירִיחוֹ קִדּוּמָא מַדְנְחָא׃
These two and one half tribes have taken their hereditary property on this side of the Yardein near Yereicho, to the east, toward the sunrise.”
