- Numbers 17:16
וַיְדַבֵּר יְהֹוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר׃
GOD spoke to Moses, saying:
Targum Onkelos
וּמַלֵּיל יְיָ עִם מֹשֶׁה לְמֵימַר׃
Adonoy spoke to Moshe, saying:
- Numbers 17:17
דַּבֵּר ׀ אֶל־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְקַח מֵאִתָּם מַטֶּה מַטֶּה לְבֵית אָב מֵאֵת כׇּל־נְשִׂיאֵהֶם לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר מַטּוֹת אִישׁ אֶת־שְׁמוֹ תִּכְתֹּב עַל־מַטֵּהוּ׃
Speak to the Israelite people and take from them—from the chieftains of their ancestral houses—one staff for each chieftain of an ancestral house: twelve staffs in all. Inscribe each one’s name on his staff,
Targum Onkelos
מַלֵּיל עִם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְסַב מִנְּהוֹן חוּטְרָא חוּטְרָא לְבֵית אַבָּא מִן כָּל רַבְרְבָנֵיהוֹן לְבֵית אֲבָהָתְהוֹן תְּרֵי עֲשַׂר חוּטְרִין גְּבַר יָת שְׁמֵיהּ תִּכְתּוֹב עַל חוּטְרֵיהּ׃
“Speak to Bnei Yisroel and take from among them a staff, a staff for each father’s [tribal] house, from all the leaders according to their fathers’ houses, twelve staffs; and you shall write each man’s name on his staff.
- Numbers 17:18
וְאֵת שֵׁם אַהֲרֹן תִּכְתֹּב עַל־מַטֵּה לֵוִי כִּי מַטֶּה אֶחָד לְרֹאשׁ בֵּית אֲבוֹתָם׃
there being one staff for each head of an ancestral house; also inscribe Aaron’s name on the staff of Levi.
Targum Onkelos
וְיָת שְׁמָא דְּאַהֲרֹן תִּכְתּוֹב עַל חוּטְרָא דְּלֵוִי אֲרֵי חוּטְרָא חַד לְרֵישׁ בֵּית אֲבָהָתְהוֹן׃
You shall write the name of Aharon on the staff of Levi, for, [there is] one staff for the head of their fathers’ house.
- Numbers 17:19
וְהִנַּחְתָּם בְּאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד לִפְנֵי הָעֵדוּת אֲשֶׁר אִוָּעֵד לָכֶם שָׁמָּה׃
Deposit them in the Tent of Meeting before the Pact, where I meet with you.
Targum Onkelos
וְתַצְנְעִנּוּן בְּמַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא קֳדָם סָהֲדוּתָא דַּאֲזָמֵין מֵימְרִי לְכוֹן תַּמָּן׃
You shall leave them inside the Tent of Meeting before the testimony where there I [My word] meet you.
- Numbers 17:20
וְהָיָה הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר אֶבְחַר־בּוֹ מַטֵּהוּ יִפְרָח וַהֲשִׁכֹּתִי מֵעָלַי אֶת־תְּלֻנּוֹת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר הֵם מַלִּינִם עֲלֵיכֶם׃
The staff of the man whom I choose shall sprout, and I will rid Myself of the incessant mutterings of the Israelites against you.
Targum Onkelos
וִיהֵי גּוּבְרָא דְּאֶתְרְעֵי בֵיהּ חוּטְרֵיהּ יַנְעֵי וַאֲנִיחַ מִן קֳדָמַי יָת תּוּרְעֲמָת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל דְּאִנּוּן מִתְרָעֲמִין עֲלֵיכוֹן׃
It shall be that the man whom I choose, his staff shall blossom; and I will abate from Myself [before Me] the complaints of Bnei Yisroel that they complain against you.”
- Numbers 17:21
וַיְדַבֵּר מֹשֶׁה אֶל־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיִּתְּנוּ אֵלָיו ׀ כׇּל־נְשִׂיאֵיהֶם מַטֶּה לְנָשִׂיא אֶחָד מַטֶּה לְנָשִׂיא אֶחָד לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר מַטּוֹת וּמַטֵּה אַהֲרֹן בְּתוֹךְ מַטּוֹתָם׃
Moses spoke thus to the Israelites. Their chieftains gave him a staff for each chieftain of an ancestral house, twelve staffs in all; among these staffs was that of Aaron.
Targum Onkelos
וּמַלֵּיל מֹשֶׁה עִם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וִיהַבוּ לֵיהּ כָּל רַבְרְבָנֵיהוֹן חוּטְרָא לְרַבָּא חַד חוּטְרָא לְרַבָּא חַד לְבֵית אֲבָהָתְהוֹן תְּרֵי עֲשַׂר חוּטְרִין וְחוּטְרָא דְּאַהֲרֹן בְּגוֹ חוּטְרֵיהוֹן׃
Moshe spoke to Bnei Yisroel and all the leaders gave to him a staff for each leader; a staff for each leader, according to their fathers’ house, twelve staffs, and the staff of Aharon [was] among their staffs.
- Numbers 17:22
וַיַּנַּח מֹשֶׁה אֶת־הַמַּטֹּת לִפְנֵי יְהֹוָה בְּאֹהֶל הָעֵדֻת׃
Moses deposited the staffs before GOD, in the Tent of the Pact.
Targum Onkelos
וְאַצְנַע מֹשֶׁה יָת חוּטְרַיָּא קֳדָם יְיָ בְּמַשְׁכְּנָא דְּסָהֲדוּתָא׃
Moshe placed the staffs before Adonoy in the Tent of the Testimony.
- Numbers 17:23
וַיְהִי מִמׇּחֳרָת וַיָּבֹא מֹשֶׁה אֶל־אֹהֶל הָעֵדוּת וְהִנֵּה פָּרַח מַטֵּה־אַהֲרֹן לְבֵית לֵוִי וַיֹּצֵא פֶרַח וַיָּצֵץ צִיץ וַיִּגְמֹל שְׁקֵדִים׃
The next day Moses entered the Tent of the Pact, and there the staff of Aaron of the house of Levi had sprouted: it had brought forth sprouts, produced blossoms, and borne almonds.
Targum Onkelos
וַהֲוָה בְּיוֹמָא דְּבָתְרוֹהִי וְעָאל מֹשֶׁה לְמַשְׁכְּנָא דְּסָהֲדוּתָא וְהָא יְעָא חוּטְרָא דְּאַהֲרֹן לְבֵית לֵוִי וְאַפֵּיק לַבְלַבִּין וַאֲנֵיץ נַץ וְכַפֵּית שִׁגְדִּין׃
It was on the next day, Moshe came inside the Tent of the Testimony, and behold! The staff of Aharon blossomed for the house of Levi, a blossom came forth, and bloomed buds and bore ripe almonds.

וַיֹּצֵא מֹשֶׁה אֶת־כׇּל־הַמַּטֹּת מִלִּפְנֵי יְהֹוָה אֶל־כׇּל־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיִּרְאוּ וַיִּקְחוּ אִישׁ מַטֵּהוּ׃
Moses then brought out all the staffs from before GOD to all the Israelites; each identified and recovered his staff.
Targum Onkelos
וְאַפֵּיק מֹשֶׁה יָת כָּל חוּטְרַיָּא מִן קֳדָם יְיָ לְכָל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאִשְׁתְּמוֹדַעוּ וּנְסִיבוּ גְּבַר חוּטְרֵיהּ׃
Moshe then brought out all the staffs from before Adonoy to all Bnei Yisroel, and each (man) saw [recognized], and retrieved his staff.
