- Numbers 16:1
וַיִּקַּח קֹרַח בֶּן־יִצְהָר בֶּן־קְהָת בֶּן־לֵוִי וְדָתָן וַאֲבִירָם בְּנֵי אֱלִיאָב וְאוֹן בֶּן־פֶּלֶת בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵן׃
Now Korah, son of Izhar son of Kohath son of Levi, betook himself, along with Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth—descendants of Reuben—
Targum Onkelos
וְאִתְפְּלֵיג קֹרַח בַּר יִצְהָר בַּר קְהָת בַּר לֵוִי וְדָתָן וַאֲבִירָם בְּנֵי אֱלִיאָב וְאוֹן בַּר פֶּלֶת בְּנֵי רְאוּבֵן׃
Korach took [divided], [Korach], the son of Yitzhar the son of Kehos, the son of Levi, and Dasan and Aviram the sons of Eliav, and On the son of Peles, the sons of Reuvein.
- Numbers 16:2
וַיָּקֻמוּ לִפְנֵי מֹשֶׁה וַאֲנָשִׁים מִבְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל חֲמִשִּׁים וּמָאתָיִם נְשִׂיאֵי עֵדָה קְרִאֵי מוֹעֵד אַנְשֵׁי־שֵׁם׃
to rise up against Moses, together with certain other Israelites, two hundred and fifty of them: chieftains of the community, chosen in the assembly, men of repute.
Targum Onkelos
וְקָמוּ לְאַפֵּי מֹשֶׁה וְגוּבְרַיָּא מִבְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מָאתַן וְחַמְשִׁין רַבְרְבֵי כְּנִשְׁתָּא מְעָרְעֵי זְמָן אֲנָשִׁין דִּשְׁמָא׃
They rose up before Moshe with men from Bnei Yisroel [numbering] two hundred and fifty, who were the leaders of the congregation, those who were called to meetings, men of [prominent] name.
- Numbers 16:3
וַיִּקָּהֲלוּ עַל־מֹשֶׁה וְעַל־אַהֲרֹן וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֲלֵהֶם רַב־לָכֶם כִּי כׇל־הָעֵדָה כֻּלָּם קְדֹשִׁים וּבְתוֹכָם יְהֹוָה וּמַדּוּעַ תִּתְנַשְּׂאוּ עַל־קְהַל יְהֹוָה׃
They combined against Moses and Aaron and said to them, “You have gone too far! For all the community are holy, all of them, and GOD is in their midst. Why then do you raise yourselves above GOD’s congregation?”
Targum Onkelos
וְאִתְכְּנִישׁוּ עַל מֹשֶׁה וְעַל אַהֲרֹן וַאֲמַרוּ לְהוֹן סַגִּי לְכוֹן אֲרֵי כָל כְּנִשְׁתָּא כּוּלְּהוֹן קַדִּישִׁין וּבֵינֵיהוֹן שָׁרְיָא שְׁכִינְתָא דַּייָ וּמָדֵין אַתּוּן מִתְרַבְרְבִין עַל קְהָלָא דַּייָ׃
They gathered against Moshe and Aharon, and they said to them: “You have [taken] too much for yourselves [and] since the entire congregation are all holy and Adonoy is [the Shechinah of Hashem dwells] in their midst, why do [what is this that] you raise yourselves above the assembly of Adonoy?”
- Numbers 16:4
וַיִּשְׁמַע מֹשֶׁה וַיִּפֹּל עַל־פָּנָיו׃
When Moses heard this, he fell on his face.
Targum Onkelos
וּשְׁמַע מֹשֶׁה וּנְפַל עַל אַפּוֹהִי׃
Moshe heard, and he fell upon his face.
- Numbers 16:5
וַיְדַבֵּר אֶל־קֹרַח וְאֶל־כׇּל־עֲדָתוֹ לֵאמֹר בֹּקֶר וְיֹדַע יְהֹוָה אֶת־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ וְאֶת־הַקָּדוֹשׁ וְהִקְרִיב אֵלָיו וְאֵת אֲשֶׁר יִבְחַר־בּוֹ יַקְרִיב אֵלָיו׃
Then he spoke to Korah and all his company, saying, “Come morning, GOD will make known who is to serve, and who is holy, by granting direct access—whoever is chosen will be granted access.
Targum Onkelos
וּמַלֵּיל עִם קֹרַח וְעִם כָּל כְּנִשְׁתֵּיהּ לְמֵימַר בְּצַפְרָא וִיהוֹדַע יְיָ יָת דְּכָשַׁר לֵיהּ וְיָת דְּקַדִּישׁ וִיקָרֵיב לִקְדָמוֹהִי וְיָת דְּיִתְרְעֵי בֵיהּ יְקָרֵיב לְשִׁמּוּשֵׁיהּ׃
He spoke to Korach and to his entire congregation, saying: “[In the] morning, Adonoy will make known who is [qualified to be] His, and who is holy, He will bring close to Him; and whoever He chooses, He will bring near to Him [to His service].
- Numbers 16:6
זֹאת עֲשׂוּ קְחוּ־לָכֶם מַחְתּוֹת קֹרַח וְכׇל־עֲדָתוֹ׃
Do this: You, Korah and all your band, take fire pans,
Targum Onkelos
דָּא עֲבִידוּ סַבוּ לְכוֹן מַחְתְּיָן קֹרַח וְכָל כְּנִשְׁתֵּיהּ׃
Do this: Take, for yourselves, fire pans, Korach and his entire congregation,
- Numbers 16:7
וּתְנוּ בָהֵן ׀ אֵשׁ וְשִׂימוּ עֲלֵיהֶן ׀ קְטֹרֶת לִפְנֵי יְהֹוָה מָחָר וְהָיָה הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר־יִבְחַר יְהֹוָה הוּא הַקָּדוֹשׁ רַב־לָכֶם בְּנֵי לֵוִי׃
and tomorrow put fire in them and lay incense on them before GOD. Then the man whom GOD chooses, he shall be the holy one. You have gone too far, sons of Levi!”
Targum Onkelos
וְהַבוּ בְהוֹן אִישָׁתָא וְשַׁוּוֹ עֲלֵיהוֹן קְטוֹרֶת בּוּסְמִין קֳדָם יְיָ מְחַר וִיהֵי גּוּבְרָא דְּיִתְרְעֵי יְיָ הוּא קַדִּישׁ סַגִּי לְכוֹן בְּנֵי לֵוִי׃
and place fire in them and put [fragrant] incense upon them before Adonoy, tomorrow; and it will be that the man who will be chosen by Adonoy, he is the holy one; [you have taken] too much upon yourselves, sons of Levi.”
- Numbers 16:8
וַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה אֶל־קֹרַח שִׁמְעוּ־נָא בְּנֵי לֵוִי׃
Moses said further to Korah, “Hear me, sons of Levi.
Targum Onkelos
וַאֲמַר מֹשֶׁה לְקֹרַח שְׁמַעוּ כְעַן בְּנֵי לֵוִי׃
Moshe said to Korach, “Please listen sons of Levi,
- Numbers 16:9
הַמְעַט מִכֶּם כִּי־הִבְדִּיל אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶתְכֶם מֵעֲדַת יִשְׂרָאֵל לְהַקְרִיב אֶתְכֶם אֵלָיו לַעֲבֹד אֶת־עֲבֹדַת מִשְׁכַּן יְהֹוָה וְלַעֲמֹד לִפְנֵי הָעֵדָה לְשָׁרְתָם׃
Is it not enough for you that the God of Israel has set you apart from the community of Israel and given you direct access, to perform the duties of GOD’s Tabernacle and to minister to the community and serve them?
Targum Onkelos
הַזְעֵיר לְכוֹן אֲרֵי אַפְרֵישׁ אֱלָהָא דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל יָתְכוֹן מִכְּנִשְׁתָּא דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל לְקָרָבָא יָתְכוֹן לִקְדָמוֹהִי לְמִפְלַח יָת פּוּלְחַן מַשְׁכְּנָא דַּייָ וְלִמְקָם קֳדָם כְּנִשְׁתָּא לְשַׁמָּשׁוּתְהוֹן׃
is it but a pittance for yourselves that the God of Israel has separated you from the [rest of the] congregation of Israel to bring you closer to [before] Him to perform the services of the Mishkan of Adonoy, and to stand before the congregation to serve them?
- Numbers 16:10
וַיַּקְרֵב אֹתְךָ וְאֶת־כׇּל־אַחֶיךָ בְנֵי־לֵוִי אִתָּךְ וּבִקַּשְׁתֶּם גַּם־כְּהֻנָּה׃
Now that [God] has advanced you and all your fellow Levites with you, do you seek the priesthood too?
Targum Onkelos
וְקָרֵיב יָתָךְ וְיָת כָּל אֲחָךְ בְּנֵי לֵוִי עִמָּךְ וּבָעַן אַתּוּן אַף כְּהוּנְּתָא רַבְּתָא׃
He brought you near with all of your brethren the sons of Levi with you, and yet [now] you ask to be kohanim [Kohein Gadol] as well?
- Numbers 16:11
לָכֵן אַתָּה וְכׇל־עֲדָתְךָ הַנֹּעָדִים עַל־יְהֹוָה וְאַהֲרֹן מַה־הוּא כִּי (תלונו) [תַלִּינוּ] עָלָיו׃
Truly, it is against GOD that you and all your company have banded together. For who is Aaron that you should rail against him?”
Targum Onkelos
בְּכֵן אַתְּ וְכָל כְּנִשְׁתָּךְ דְּאִזְדָּמַנְתּוּן עַל יְיָ וְאַהֲרֹן מָא הוּא אֲרֵי מִתְרָעֲמִתּוּן עֲלוֹהִי׃
Therefore, you and your entire congregation who are gathered against Adonoy; and what is Aharon that you rail against him?”
- Numbers 16:12
וַיִּשְׁלַח מֹשֶׁה לִקְרֹא לְדָתָן וְלַאֲבִירָם בְּנֵי אֱלִיאָב וַיֹּאמְרוּ לֹא נַעֲלֶה׃
Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab; but they said, “We will not come!
Targum Onkelos
וּשְׁלַח מֹשֶׁה לְמִקְרֵי לְדָתָן וְלַאֲבִירָם בְּנֵי אֱלִיאָב וַאֲמַרוּ לָא נִסַּק׃
Moshe sent to call for Dasan and Avirom the sons of Eliav and they said “We will not go up.
- Numbers 16:13
הַמְעַט כִּי הֶעֱלִיתָנוּ מֵאֶרֶץ זָבַת חָלָב וּדְבַשׁ לַהֲמִיתֵנוּ בַּמִּדְבָּר כִּי־תִשְׂתָּרֵר עָלֵינוּ גַּם־הִשְׂתָּרֵר׃
Is it not enough that you brought us from a land flowing with milk and honey to have us die in the wilderness, that you would also lord it over us?
Targum Onkelos
הַזְעֵיר אֲרֵי אַסֵּיקְתַּנָא מֵאֲרַע עָבְדָא חֲלָב וּדְבַשׁ לְקַטָּלוּתַנָא בְּמַדְבְּרָא אֲרֵי מִתְרָרַבְתְּ עֲלַנָא אַף אִתְרַבְרָבָא׃
Is it but a pittance that you have brought us up from a land flowing with [that produces] milk and honey to kill us in the desert, that you must excercise power over us to make yourself powerful as well?
