- Exodus 33:17
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהֹוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה גַּם אֶת־הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתָּ אֶעֱשֶׂה כִּי־מָצָאתָ חֵן בְּעֵינַי וָאֵדָעֲךָ בְּשֵׁם׃
And GOD said to Moses, “I will also do this thing that you have asked; for you have truly gained My favor and I have singled you out by name.”
Targum Onkelos
וַאֲמַר יְיָ לְמֹשֶׁה אַף יָת פִּתְגָמָא הָדֵין דְּמַלֵּילְתָּא אַעֲבֵיד אֲרֵי אַשְׁכַּחְתָּא רַחֲמִין קֳדָמַי וְרַבִּיתָךְ בְּשׁוֹם׃
Adonoy said to Moshe, “I will also do this thing that you have spoken, for you have found favor in My eyes [before Me], and I know [exalted] you by name.”
- Exodus 33:18
וַיֹּאמַר הַרְאֵנִי נָא אֶת־כְּבֹדֶךָ׃
He said, “Oh, let me behold Your Presence!”
Targum Onkelos
וַאֲמַר אַחְזִינִי כְעַן יָת יְקָרָךְ׃
He [Moshe] then said, “Please [Now] grant me a vision of Your Glory.”
- Exodus 33:19
וַיֹּאמֶר אֲנִי אַעֲבִיר כׇּל־טוּבִי עַל־פָּנֶיךָ וְקָרָאתִי בְשֵׁם יְהֹוָה לְפָנֶיךָ וְחַנֹּתִי אֶת־אֲשֶׁר אָחֹן וְרִחַמְתִּי אֶת־אֲשֶׁר אֲרַחֵם׃
And [God] answered, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim before you the name GOD [יהוה], and the grace that I grant and the compassion that I show,”
Targum Onkelos
וַאֲמַר אֲנָא אַעְבַּר כָּל טוּבִי עַל אַפָּךְ וְאֶקְרֵי בִשְׁמָא דַּייָ קֳדָמָךְ וַאֲחוּן לְמַן דַּאֲחוּן וַאֲרַחֵים עַל מַן דַּאֲרַחֵים׃
He [God] said, “I will cause all My goodness to pass before your presence, and will proclaim the Name, Adonoy, in your presence. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will be compassionate to whom I will be compassionate.
- Exodus 33:20
וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא תוּכַל לִרְאֹת אֶת־פָּנָי כִּי לֹא־יִרְאַנִי הָאָדָם וָחָי׃
continuing, “But you cannot see My face, for no mortal may see Me and live.”
Targum Onkelos
וַאֲמַר לָא תִכּוֹל לְמִחְזֵי יָת אַפֵּי שְׁכִינְתִי אֲרֵי לָא יִחְזֵינַנִי אֲנָשָׁא וְיִתְקַיַּים׃
And He said, “You cannot see [the] My Presence [of the Shechina], for no man can see My Presence and live.”
- Exodus 33:21
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהֹוָה הִנֵּה מָקוֹם אִתִּי וְנִצַּבְתָּ עַל־הַצּוּר׃
And GOD said, “See, there is a place near Me. Station yourself on the rock
Targum Onkelos
וַאֲמַר יְיָ הָא אֲתַר מְתוּקַּן קֳדָמָי וְתִתְעַתַּד עַל טִנָּרָא׃
And Adonoy said, “Behold there is a place with [prepared before] Me, and you shall set yourself on the rock.
- Exodus 33:22
וְהָיָה בַּעֲבֹר כְּבֹדִי וְשַׂמְתִּיךָ בְּנִקְרַת הַצּוּר וְשַׂכֹּתִי כַפִּי עָלֶיךָ עַד־עׇבְרִי׃
and, as My Presence passes by, I will put you in a cleft of the rock and shield you with My hand until I have passed by.
Targum Onkelos
וִיהֵי בְמִעְבַּר יְקָרִי וַאֲשַׁוֵּינָךְ בִּמְעָרַת טִנָּרָא וְאַגֵּין בְּמֵימְרִי עֲלָךְ עַד דְּאֶעְבַּר׃
When My Glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft [cave] of the rock, and I will cover [shelter] you with My Hand [Word] until I pass by.
- Exodus 33:23
וַהֲסִרֹתִי אֶת־כַּפִּי וְרָאִיתָ אֶת־אֲחֹרָי וּפָנַי לֹא יֵרָאוּ׃
Then I will take My hand away and you will see My back; but My face must not be seen.”
Targum Onkelos
וְאֶעְדֵּי יָת דִּבְרַת יְקָרִי וְתִחְזֵי יָת דְּבָתְרָי וְדִקְדָמַי לָא יִתַּחְזוֹן׃
Then I will remove [the guidance of] My Hand [Glory], and you will see My Back [that which is behind Me], but My Face [that which is before Me] shall not be seen.
