Adonoy said to me to say,

  2. Deuteronomy 2:3

You have been skirting this hill country long enough; now turn north.

  3. Deuteronomy 2:4

And charge the people as follows: You will be passing through the territory of your kin, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. Though they will be afraid of you, be very careful

    Targum Onkelos

And command the people as follows, ‘‘You are crossing into the border of your brothers, the descendants of Eisov who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, so you must be extrememly cautious.

  4. Deuteronomy 2:5

not to provoke them. For I will not give you of their land so much as a foot can tread on; I have given the hill country of Seir as a possession to Esau.

    Targum Onkelos

Do not incite them. For I will not give you of their land as much as a footstep, because for Eisov’s inheritance have I designated Mount Seir.

  5. Deuteronomy 2:6

What food you eat you shall obtain from them for money; even the water you drink you shall procure from them for money.

    Targum Onkelos

Food are you to buy from them with money and eat [it]; also water are you to purchase from them with money and drink [it.]

  6. Deuteronomy 2:7

Indeed, the ETERNAL your God has blessed you in all your undertakings, watching over your wanderings through this great wilderness; the ETERNAL your God has been with you these past forty years: you have lacked nothing.

    Targum Onkelos

For Adonoy, your God, has blessed you in all your handiwork; He has been intimately concerned with your [given you sufficient for your needs for] traversing this great wilderness. It is now forty years [that] [the word of] Adonoy, your God, is accompanying you [has aided you]; you have lacked nothing.’’

  7. Deuteronomy 2:8

We then moved on, away from our kin, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, away from the road of the Arabah, away from Elath and Ezion-geber; and we marched on in the direction of the wilderness of Moab.

    Targum Onkelos

We passed over from our brothers, the descendants of Eisov, who live in Seir, from the Arava road, from Eilas and from Etzyon-Gover. We turned and passed over by way of the wilderness of Moav.

  8. Deuteronomy 2:9

And GOD said to me: Do not harass the Moabites or provoke them to war. For I will not give you any of their land as a possession; I have assigned Ar as a possession to the descendants of Lot.—

    Targum Onkelos

Adonoy said to me, ‘‘Do not besiege Moav and do not intimidate them with [to make] war [with them]. For I will not give you [any] of his land as inheritance, for to Lot’s descendants have I given Or [Lechoyas] as inheritance.

  9. Deuteronomy 2:10

It was formerly inhabited by the Emim, a people great and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites.

    Targum Onkelos

The Eimim originally lived there—a people great and numerous and powerful like the Anokim [giants].

  10. Deuteronomy 2:11

Like the Anakites, they are counted as Rephaim; but the Moabites call them Emim.

    Targum Onkelos

They, too, were considered Refaim [giants] like the Anokim [giants]; the Moabites called them Eimim.

  11. Deuteronomy 2:12

Similarly, Seir was formerly inhabited by the Horites; but the descendants of Esau dispossessed them, wiping them out and settling in their place, just as Israel did in the land they were to possess, which GOD had given to them.—

    Targum Onkelos

And in Seir lived the Chorim originally, but the descendants of Eisov inherited them and drove them out [to make room] for themselves and settled in their stead [places], as Yisroel will have done to the land of its inheritance that Adonoy has given them.

  12. Deuteronomy 2:13

Up now! Cross the wadi Zered! So we crossed the wadi Zered.

    Targum Onkelos

Now, arise and cross for yourselves Wadi Zered.’’ And we crossed Wadi Zered.

  13. Deuteronomy 2:14

The time that we spent in travel from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the wadi Zered was thirty-eight years, until that whole generation of warriors had perished from the camp, as GOD had sworn concerning them.

    Targum Onkelos

The time that [it took] us to go from Kadeish Barnei’a [Rekam Geyah] until we crossed Wadi Zered was thirty-eight years, until the end of the entire generation, the men of war, from within the camp, as Adonoy had sworn about them.

  14. Deuteronomy 2:15

Indeed, GOD’s hand struck them, to root them out from the camp until they were finished off.

    Targum Onkelos

[From before] Adonoy’s plague, too, attacked them to rout [destroy] them from within the camp, until their end.

  15. Deuteronomy 2:16

When all the warriors among the people had died off,

    Targum Onkelos

    וַהֲוָה כַּד שְׁלִימוּ כָּל גּוּבְרֵי מְגִיחֵי קְרָבָא לִמְמָת מִגּוֹ עַמָּא׃

    When they had finished—all the men of war—to die out from among the people;

  16. Deuteronomy 2:17

    GOD spoke to me, saying:

    Targum Onkelos

    Adonoy addressed me, to say,

  17. Deuteronomy 2:18

You are now passing through the territory of Moab, through Ar.

    Targum Onkelos

‘‘You are today crossing the border of Moav—at ‘Or [Lechoyas].

  18. Deuteronomy 2:19

You will then be close to the Ammonites; do not harass them or start a fight with them. For I will not give any part of the land of the Ammonites to you as a possession; I have assigned it as a possession to the descendants of Lot.—

    Targum Onkelos

When you approach [the area] facing the descendants of Ammon, do not besiege [make war with] them and do not intimidate them, for I will not give you of the land of the descendants of Ammon an inheritance, because to the descendants of Lot have I given it as an inheritance.

  19. Deuteronomy 2:20

It, too, is counted as Rephaim country. It was formerly inhabited by Rephaim, whom the Ammonites call Zamzummim,

    Targum Onkelos

It, too, is considered a land of giants; giants having lived in it originally—the Ammonites called them Zamzumim [Chushbani].

  20. Deuteronomy 2:21

a people great and numerous and as tall as the Anakites. GOD wiped them out, so that [the Ammonites] dispossessed them and settled in their place,

    Targum Onkelos

A people great and numerous and powerful like the Anokim [giants]. Adonoy destroyed them from before them, and they drove them out and settled in their stead [place].

  21. Deuteronomy 2:22

as [GOD] did for the descendants of Esau who live in Seir, by wiping out the Horites before them, so that they dispossessed them and settled in their place, as is still the case.

    Targum Onkelos

As He had done to the descendants of Eisov living in Seir, from before whom He destroyed the Chori, and they drove them out and settled in their stead [places] until today.

  22. Deuteronomy 2:23

So, too, with the Avvim who dwelt in villages in the vicinity of Gaza: the Caphtorim, who came from Crete, wiped them out and settled in their place.—

    Targum Onkelos

And the Avim who had been living in Chatzeirim [Defiach] till Azah—Caftorim [Kaputka’ites] who had left Caftor [Kaputkayah] destroyed them and settled in their stead [place].

  23. Deuteronomy 2:24

Up! Set out across the wadi Arnon! See, I give into your power Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin the occupation: engage him in battle.

    Targum Onkelos

Arise to travel, and cross Wadi Arnon. See, I have put into your hand Sichon, King of Cheshbon, the Emorite and his land—begin inheriting [it] by intimidating him with [waging] war [with him].

  24. Deuteronomy 2:25

This day I begin to put the dread and fear of you upon the peoples everywhere under heaven, so that they shall tremble and quake because of you whenever they hear you mentioned.

    Targum Onkelos

Today I begin to place fear of you and awe of you upon the peoples under the whole heaven, so that they will hear your reputation and will shiver and tremble before you.’’

  25. Deuteronomy 2:26

Then I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to King Sihon of Heshbon with an offer of peace, as follows,

    Targum Onkelos

I sent emissaries from the wilderness of Kedeimos to Sichon, King of Cheshbon, with the following peaceful statement:

  26. Deuteronomy 2:27

“Let me pass through your country. I will keep strictly to the highway, turning off neither to the right nor to the left.

    Targum Onkelos

‘‘Let me pass through your land. I will travel only on the highway, I will not deviate right or left.

  27. Deuteronomy 2:28

What food I eat you will supply for money, and what water I drink you will furnish for money; just let me pass through—

    Targum Onkelos

Food for money sell me so I can eat, and water for money sell me so I can drink—just let me cross on foot.

  28. Deuteronomy 2:29

as the descendants of Esau who dwell in Seir did for me, and the Moabites who dwell in Ar—that I may cross the Jordan into the land that the ETERNAL our God is giving us.”

    Targum Onkelos

As the descendants of Eisov did for me who live in Seir and the Moavites who live in Or [Lechoyas]; until I will have crossed the Yardein into the land that Adonoy, our God, is giving us.’’

  29. Deuteronomy 2:30

But King Sihon of Heshbon refused to let us pass through, because GOD had stiffened his will and hardened his heart in order to deliver him into your power—as is now the case.

    Targum Onkelos

But Sichon, King of Cheshbon, was not willing to let us traverse it [would not permit us to pass through his borders], because Adonoy, your God, had hardened his spirit and emboldened his mind in order to put him in your hand this day.
