    GOD spoke to Moses:

    Targum Onkelos

    Adonoy spoke to Moshe saying,

  2. Exodus 16:12

“I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Speak to them and say: By evening you shall eat flesh, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread; and you shall know that I the ETERNAL am your God.”

    Targum Onkelos

“I have heard the complaints of the B’nei Yisrael [have been heard before Me]. Speak to them saying, ‘Between evenings [afternoon] you will eat meat, and in the morning you will have your fill of bread, and you will know that I am Adonoy, your God.

  3. Exodus 16:13

In the evening quail appeared and covered the camp; in the morning there was a fall of dew about the camp.

    Targum Onkelos

It was evening and quails rose up and covered the camp. In the morning there was a layer of dew [descended] around the camp.

  4. Exodus 16:14

When the fall of dew lifted, there, over the surface of the wilderness, lay a fine and flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground.

    Targum Onkelos

The layer of dew [that had fallen] had risen, and behold, on the surface of the desert were thin [uncovered] [peeled away] flakes. It was as fine as [gir, like] frost on the ground.

  5. Exodus 16:15

When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?”—for they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “That is the bread that GOD has given you to eat.

    Targum Onkelos

The B’nei Yisrael saw it and said to one another, “It is a food,” for they did not know [exactly] what [kind] it was. Moshe said to them, “This is the bread that Adonoy is giving you to eat.

  6. Exodus 16:16

This is what GOD has commanded: Each household shall gather as much as it requires to eat—an omer to a person for as many of you as there are; each household shall fetch according to those in its tent.”

    Targum Onkelos

This is what Adonoy has commanded: Each man shall gather his requirement of food. An omer per person, according to the number of your people. shall each man take for those in his tent.”

  7. Exodus 16:17

The Israelites did so, some gathering much, some little.

    Targum Onkelos

The B’nei Yisrael did so. They gathered it, some more, some less.

  8. Exodus 16:18

But when they measured it by the omer, anyone who had gathered much had no excess, and anyone who had gathered little had no deficiency: each household had gathered as much as it needed to eat.

    Targum Onkelos

However when they measured it with an omer, the one who had taken more had no extra, and the one who had taken less, was not lacking. They had gathered exactly enough for each one to eat.

  9. Exodus 16:19

And Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it over until morning.”

    Targum Onkelos

But they paid no attention to Moses; some of them left of it until morning, and it became infested with maggots and stank. And Moses was angry with them.

    Targum Onkelos

So they gathered it every morning, as much as each one needed to eat; for when the sun grew hot, it would melt.

    Targum Onkelos

They gathered it each morning, each man according to what he would eat. [When] the sun became hot [on that which remained from it upon the face of the field], it melted.

  12. Exodus 16:22

On the sixth day they gathered double the amount of food, two omers for each; and when all the chieftains of the community came and told Moses,

    Targum Onkelos

he said to them, “This is what GOD meant: Tomorrow is a day of rest, a holy sabbath of GOD. Bake what you would bake and boil what you would boil; and all that is left put aside to be kept until morning.”

    Targum Onkelos

He said to them, “This is what Adonoy has said: Tomorrow is a [day of] rest, Adonoy’s [a] holy Shabbos [before Adonoy]. Bake what you want to bake, and cook what you want to cook, and whatever is left over, put aside for yourselves, to preserve it until the morning.”

Then Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a sabbath of GOD; you will not find it today on the plain.

    Targum Onkelos
