- Numbers 4:1
וַיְדַבֵּר יְהֹוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה וְאֶל־אַהֲרֹן לֵאמֹר׃
GOD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying:
Targum Onkelos
וּמַלֵּיל יְיָ עִם מֹשֶׁה וּלְאַהֲרֹן לְמֵימַר׃
Adonoy spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying;
- Numbers 4:2
נָשֹׂא אֶת־רֹאשׁ בְּנֵי קְהָת מִתּוֹךְ בְּנֵי לֵוִי לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם׃
Take a [separate] census of the Kohathites among the Levites, by the clans of their ancestral house,
Targum Onkelos
קַבִּילוּ יָת חוּשְׁבַּן בְּנֵי קְהָת מִגּוֹ בְּנֵי לֵוִי לְזַרְעֲיָתְהוֹן לְבֵית אֲבָהָתְהוֹן׃
Take the count of the sons of Kehos from among the sons of Levi according to their families according to the house of their fathers.
- Numbers 4:3
מִבֶּן שְׁלֹשִׁים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה וְעַד בֶּן־חֲמִשִּׁים שָׁנָה כׇּל־בָּא לַצָּבָא לַעֲשׂוֹת מְלָאכָה בְּאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד׃
from the age of thirty years up to the age of fifty, all who are subject to service, to perform tasks for the Tent of Meeting.
Targum Onkelos
מִבַּר תְּלָתִין שְׁנִין וּלְעֵילָא וְעַד בַּר חַמְשִׁין שְׁנִין כָּל דְּאָתֵי לְחֵילָא לְמֶעֱבַד עֲבִידְתָא בְּמַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא׃
From thirty years and above until fifty years, all who enter into the division to perform service in the Tent of Meeting.
- Numbers 4:4
זֹאת עֲבֹדַת בְּנֵי־קְהָת בְּאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד קֹדֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִׁים׃
This is the responsibility of the Kohathites in the Tent of Meeting: the most sacred objects.
Targum Onkelos
דֵּין פּוּלְחַן בְּנֵי קְהָת בְּמַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא קוֹדֶשׁ קוּדְשַׁיָּא׃
This is the service of the sons of Kehos in the Tent of Meeting, the Holy of Holies.
- Numbers 4:5
וּבָא אַהֲרֹן וּבָנָיו בִּנְסֹעַ הַמַּחֲנֶה וְהוֹרִדוּ אֵת פָּרֹכֶת הַמָּסָךְ וְכִסּוּ־בָהּ אֵת אֲרֹן הָעֵדֻת׃
At the breaking of camp, Aaron and his sons shall go in and take down the screening curtain and cover the Ark of the Pact with it.
Targum Onkelos
וְיֵיעוֹל אַהֲרֹן וּבְנוֹהִי בְּמִטַּל מַשְׁרִיתָא וִיפָרְקוּן יָת פָּרוּכְתָּא דִּפְרָסָא וִיכַסּוֹן בַּהּ יָת אֲרוֹנָא דְּסָהֲדוּתָא׃
Aharon and his sons shall enter when the camp is about to travel, and take down the screening curtain and, with it they shall cover the Ark of the Testimony.
- Numbers 4:6
וְנָתְנוּ עָלָיו כְּסוּי עוֹר תַּחַשׁ וּפָרְשׂוּ בֶגֶד־כְּלִיל תְּכֵלֶת מִלְמָעְלָה וְשָׂמוּ בַּדָּיו׃
They shall lay a covering of dolphin skin over it and spread a cloth of pure blue on top; and they shall put its poles in place.
Targum Onkelos
וְיִתְּנוּן עֲלוֹהִי חוּפָאָה דִּמְשַׁךְ סָסְגוֹנָא וְיִפְרְסוּן לְבוּשׁ גְּמִיר תַּכְלָא מִלְּעֵילָא וִישַׁוּוֹן אֲרִיחוֹהִי׃
They shall place upon it a covering of tachash [multi-colored]-hide and spread an entirely blue woolen cloth on top of it, and put its [carrying] poles [in place].
- Numbers 4:7
וְעַל ׀ שֻׁלְחַן הַפָּנִים יִפְרְשׂוּ בֶּגֶד תְּכֵלֶת וְנָתְנוּ עָלָיו אֶת־הַקְּעָרֹת וְאֶת־הַכַּפֹּת וְאֶת־הַמְּנַקִּיֹּת וְאֵת קְשׂוֹת הַנָּסֶךְ וְלֶחֶם הַתָּמִיד עָלָיו יִהְיֶה׃
Over the table of display they shall spread a blue cloth; they shall place upon it the bowls, the ladles, the jars, and the libation jugs; and the regular bread shall rest upon it.
Targum Onkelos
וְעַל פָּתוּרָא דִּלְחֵים אַפַּיָּא יִפְרְסוּן לְבוּשׁ תַּכְלָא וְיִתְּנוּן עֲלוֹהִי יָת מְגִסַּיָּא וְיָת בָּזִכַּיָּא וְיָת מְכִילָתָא וְיָת קָסְוָת נִסּוּכָא וְלַחְמָא תְּדִירָא עֲלוֹהִי יְהֵי׃
On the Show Table [table of the show bread] they shall spread a blue woolen cloth and they shall place upon it the molds, spoons, rods and the covering props, and the continual bread shall be upon it [continually].
- Numbers 4:8
וּפָרְשׂוּ עֲלֵיהֶם בֶּגֶד תּוֹלַעַת שָׁנִי וְכִסּוּ אֹתוֹ בְּמִכְסֵה עוֹר תָּחַשׁ וְשָׂמוּ אֶת־בַּדָּיו׃
They shall spread over these a crimson cloth that they shall cover with a covering of dolphin skin; and they shall put the poles in place.
Targum Onkelos
וְיִפְרְסוּן עֲלֵיהוֹן לְבוּשׁ צְבַע זְהוֹרִי וִיכַסּוֹן יָתֵיהּ בְּחוּפָאָה דִּמְשַׁךְ סָסְגוֹנָא וִישַׁוּוֹן יָת אֲרִיחוֹהִי׃
They shall spread upon them a cloth of crimson thread and they shall cover it with a covering of tachash [multi-colored]-hide and put its [carrying] poles [in place].
- Numbers 4:9
וְלָקְחוּ ׀ בֶּגֶד תְּכֵלֶת וְכִסּוּ אֶת־מְנֹרַת הַמָּאוֹר וְאֶת־נֵרֹתֶיהָ וְאֶת־מַלְקָחֶיהָ וְאֶת־מַחְתֹּתֶיהָ וְאֵת כׇּל־כְּלֵי שַׁמְנָהּ אֲשֶׁר יְשָׁרְתוּ־לָהּ בָּהֶם׃
Then they shall take a blue cloth and cover the lampstand for lighting, with its lamps, its tongs, and its fire pans, as well as all the oil vessels that are used in its service.
Targum Onkelos
וְיִסְּבוּן לְבוּשׁ תַּכְלָא וִיכַסּוֹן יָת מְנָרְתָא דְּאַנְהוֹרֵי וְיָת בּוֹצִינַהָא וְיָת צֵיבְתַהָא וְיָת מַחְתְּיָתַהָא וְיָת כָּל מָנֵי שִׁמּוּשַׁהּ דִּישַׁמְּשׁוּן לַהּ בְּהוֹן׃
They shall take a blue woolen cloth and they shall cover the Menorah that illuminates and its lamps, its tongs and its scoops and all of its oil vessels; those with which you use to perform its service.
- Numbers 4:10
וְנָתְנוּ אֹתָהּ וְאֶת־כׇּל־כֵּלֶיהָ אֶל־מִכְסֵה עוֹר תָּחַשׁ וְנָתְנוּ עַל־הַמּוֹט׃
They shall put it and all its furnishings into a covering of dolphin skin, which they shall then place on a carrying frame.
Targum Onkelos
וְיִתְּנוּן יָתַהּ וְיָת כָּל מָנַהָא לְחוּפָאָה דִּמְשַׁךְ סָסְגוֹנָא וְיִתְּנוּן עַל אֲרִיחָא׃
They shall put it and all of its utensils into the covering of the tachash [multi-colored]-hide and put it on the carrying frame.
- Numbers 4:11
וְעַל ׀ מִזְבַּח הַזָּהָב יִפְרְשׂוּ בֶּגֶד תְּכֵלֶת וְכִסּוּ אֹתוֹ בְּמִכְסֵה עוֹר תָּחַשׁ וְשָׂמוּ אֶת־בַּדָּיו׃
Next they shall spread a blue cloth over the altar of gold and cover it with a covering of dolphin skin; and they shall put its poles in place.
Targum Onkelos
וְעַל מַדְבְּחָא דְּדַהְבָּא יִפְרְסוּן לְבוּשׁ תַּכְלָא וִיכַסּוֹן יָתֵיהּ בְּחוּפָאָה דִּמְשַׁךְ סָסְגוֹנָא וִישַׁוּוֹן יָת אֲרִיחוֹהִי׃
On top of the golden Altar they shall spread a blue woolen cloth and they shall cover it with a covering of tachash [multi-colored]-hide, and put its [carrying] poles in place.
- Numbers 4:12
וְלָקְחוּ אֶת־כׇּל־כְּלֵי הַשָּׁרֵת אֲשֶׁר יְשָׁרְתוּ־בָם בַּקֹּדֶשׁ וְנָתְנוּ אֶל־בֶּגֶד תְּכֵלֶת וְכִסּוּ אוֹתָם בְּמִכְסֵה עוֹר תָּחַשׁ וְנָתְנוּ עַל־הַמּוֹט׃
They shall take all the service vessels with which the service in the sanctuary is performed, put them into a blue cloth and cover them with a covering of dolphin skin, which they shall then place on a carrying frame.
Targum Onkelos
וְיִסְּבוּן יָת כָּל מָנֵי שִׁמּוּשָׁא דִּישַׁמְּשׁוּן בְּהוֹן בְּקוּדְשָׁא וְיִתְּנוּן לִלְבוּשׁ תַּכְלָא וִיכַסּוֹן יָתְהוֹן בְּחוּפָאָה דִּמְשַׁךְ סָסְגוֹנָא וְיִתְּנוּן עַל אֲרִיחָא׃
They shall take all the service utensils with which they serve in the Sanctuary and they shall put them inside a blue woolen cloth, and they shall cover them with a covering of tachash [multi-colored]-hide, and put it on the carrying frame.
- Numbers 4:13
וְדִשְּׁנוּ אֶת־הַמִּזְבֵּחַ וּפָרְשׂוּ עָלָיו בֶּגֶד אַרְגָּמָן׃
They shall remove the ashes from the [copper] altar and spread a purple cloth over it.
Targum Onkelos
וְיִסְפּוֹן יָת קִטְמָא דְּמַדְבְּחָא וְיִפְרְסוּן עֲלוֹהִי לְבוּשׁ אַרְגְּוָן׃
They shall remove the ashes from [atop] the Altar and they shall spread upon it a cloth of purple [wool].
- Numbers 4:14
וְנָתְנוּ עָלָיו אֶת־כׇּל־כֵּלָיו אֲשֶׁר יְשָׁרְתוּ עָלָיו בָּהֶם אֶת־הַמַּחְתֹּת אֶת־הַמִּזְלָגֹת וְאֶת־הַיָּעִים וְאֶת־הַמִּזְרָקֹת כֹּל כְּלֵי הַמִּזְבֵּחַ וּפָרְשׂוּ עָלָיו כְּסוּי עוֹר תַּחַשׁ וְשָׂמוּ בַדָּיו׃
Upon it they shall place all the vessels that are used in its service: the fire pans, the flesh hooks, the scrapers, and the basins—all the vessels of the altar—and over it they shall spread a covering of dolphin skin; and they shall put its poles in place.
Targum Onkelos
וְיִתְּנוּן עֲלוֹהִי יָת כָּל מָנוֹהִי דִּישַׁמְּשׁוּן עֲלוֹהִי בְּהוֹן יָת מַחְתְּיָתָא וְיָת צִנּוֹרְיָתָא וְיָת מַגְרוֹפְיָתָא וְיָת מִזְרְקַיָּא כֹּל מָנֵי מַדְבְּחָא וְיִפְרְסוֹן עֲלוֹהִי חוּפָאָה דִּמְשַׁךְ סָסְגוֹנָא וִישַׁוּוֹן אֲרִיחוֹהִי׃
They shall put upon it all of its utensils which they use in service, those that are used on the Altar-top; the firepans, forks, scoops and sprinklers, all the utensils of the Altar. They shall spread upon it a covering of tachash [multi-colored]-hide, and put its [carrying] poles in place.
- Numbers 4:15
וְכִלָּה אַהֲרֹן־וּבָנָיו לְכַסֹּת אֶת־הַקֹּדֶשׁ וְאֶת־כׇּל־כְּלֵי הַקֹּדֶשׁ בִּנְסֹעַ הַמַּחֲנֶה וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן יָבֹאוּ בְנֵי־קְהָת לָשֵׂאת וְלֹא־יִגְּעוּ אֶל־הַקֹּדֶשׁ וָמֵתוּ אֵלֶּה מַשָּׂא בְנֵי־קְהָת בְּאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד׃
When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sacred objects and all the furnishings of the sacred objects at the breaking of camp, only then shall the Kohathites come and lift them, so that they do not come in contact with the sacred objects and die. These things in the Tent of Meeting shall be the porterage of the Kohathites.
Targum Onkelos
וִישֵׁיצֵי אַהֲרֹן וּבְנוֹהִי לְכַסָּאָה יָת קוּדְשָׁא וְיָת כָּל מָנֵי קוּדְשָׁא בְּמִטַּל מַשְׁרִיתָא וּבָתַר כֵּן יֵיעֲלוּן בְּנֵי קְהָת לְמִטַּל וְלָא יִקְרְבוּן לְקוּדְשָׁא וְלָא יְמוּתוּן דֵּין מַטוּל בְּנֵי קְהָת בְּמַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא׃
Aharon and his sons shall complete the covering of the Sanctuary and all of the holy utensils whenever the camp is about to travel, and after that, the sons of Kehos shall come to carry [these items], and they shall not touch the Holy [objects] and they will [not] die. These are what the sons of Kehos must carry for the Tent of Meeting.
- Numbers 4:16
וּפְקֻדַּת אֶלְעָזָר ׀ בֶּן־אַהֲרֹן הַכֹּהֵן שֶׁמֶן הַמָּאוֹר וּקְטֹרֶת הַסַּמִּים וּמִנְחַת הַתָּמִיד וְשֶׁמֶן הַמִּשְׁחָה פְּקֻדַּת כׇּל־הַמִּשְׁכָּן וְכׇל־אֲשֶׁר־בּוֹ בְּקֹדֶשׁ וּבְכֵלָיו׃
Responsibility shall rest with Eleazar son of Aaron the priest for the lighting oil, the aromatic incense, the regular grain offering, and the anointing oil—responsibility for the whole Tabernacle and for everything consecrated that is in it or in its vessels.
Targum Onkelos
וְדִמְסִיר לְאֶלְעָזָר בַּר אַהֲרֹן כָּהֲנָא מִשְׁחָא דְּאַנְהָרוּתָא וּקְטוֹרֶת בּוּסְמַיָּא וּמִנְחָתָא תְּדִירָא וּמִשְׁחָא דִּרְבוּתָא מָסְרַת כָּל מַשְׁכְּנָא וְכָל דְּבֵיהּ בְּקוּדְשָׁא וּבְמָנוֹהִי׃
Encharged [given] to Elazar, the son of Aharon the kohein, is the oil for illumination, the incense of spices the continual [daily] meal-offering and the anointing oil; the charge of the entire Mishkon and all of its contents in the Sanctuary, and its utensils.

וַיְדַבֵּר יְהֹוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה וְאֶל־אַהֲרֹן לֵאמֹר׃
GOD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying:
Targum Onkelos
וּמַלֵּיל יְיָ עִם מֹשֶׁה וּלְאַהֲרֹן לְמֵימַר׃
Adonoy spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying:
- Numbers 4:18
אַל־תַּכְרִיתוּ אֶת־שֵׁבֶט מִשְׁפְּחֹת הַקְּהָתִי מִתּוֹךְ הַלְוִיִּם׃
Do not let the group of Kohathite clans be cut off from the Levites.
Targum Onkelos
לָא תְשֵׁיצוֹן יָת שֵׁיבַט זַרְעֲיָת קְהָת מִגּוֹ לֵיוָאֵי׃
Do not cut off the tribe of the families of the Kehosites, from among the Levites.
- Numbers 4:19
וְזֹאת ׀ עֲשׂוּ לָהֶם וְחָיוּ וְלֹא יָמֻתוּ בְּגִשְׁתָּם אֶת־קֹדֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִׁים אַהֲרֹן וּבָנָיו יָבֹאוּ וְשָׂמוּ אוֹתָם אִישׁ אִישׁ עַל־עֲבֹדָתוֹ וְאֶל־מַשָּׂאוֹ׃
Do this with them, that they may live and not die when they approach the most sacred objects: let Aaron and his sons go in and assign every one of them, in turn, to his duties and to his porterage.
Targum Onkelos
וְדָא עֲבִידוּ לְהוֹן וְיֵיחוֹן וְלָא יְמוּתוּן בְּמִקְרַבְהוֹן לְקוֹדֶשׁ קוּדְשַׁיָּא אַהֲרֹן וּבְנוֹהִי יֵיעֲלוּן וִימַנּוֹן יָתְהוֹן גְּבַר גְּבַר עַל פּוּלְחָנֵיהּ וּלְמַטוּלֵיהּ׃
This is what you must do for them, that they may live and not die when they approach the Holy of Holies; Aharon and his sons shall [first] come and appoint them each man individually, to [perform] his own service, and to carry his own load.
- Numbers 4:20
וְלֹא־יָבֹאוּ לִרְאוֹת כְּבַלַּע אֶת־הַקֹּדֶשׁ וָמֵתוּ׃
But let not [the Kohathites] go inside and witness the dismantling of the sanctuary, lest they die.
Targum Onkelos
וְלָא יֵיעֲלוּן לְמִחְזֵי כַּד מְכַסַּן יָת מָנֵי קוּדְשָׁא וְלָא יְמוּתוּן׃
They shall not come in to see when the holy is [utensils are] being covered and [they will not] die.
