- Numbers 1:1
וַיְדַבֵּר יְהֹוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה בְּמִדְבַּר סִינַי בְּאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד בְּאֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִי בַּשָּׁנָה הַשֵּׁנִית לְצֵאתָם מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם לֵאמֹר׃
On the first day of the second month, in the second year after the exodus from the land of Egypt, GOD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, saying:
Targum Onkelos
וּמַלֵּיל יְיָ עִם מֹשֶׁה בְּמַדְבְּרָא דְּסִינַי בְּמַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא בְּחַד לְיַרְחָא תִּנְיָנָא בְּשַׁתָּא תִּנְיֵיתָא לְמִפַּקְהוֹן מֵאַרְעָא דְּמִצְרַיִם לְמֵימַר׃
And Adonoy spoke to Moshe in the Sinai desert, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first [day] of the second month, in the second year of their exodus from the land of Egypt, saying:
- Numbers 1:2
שְׂאוּ אֶת־רֹאשׁ כׇּל־עֲדַת בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם בְּמִסְפַּר שֵׁמוֹת כׇּל־זָכָר לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָם׃
Take a census of the whole Israelite community by the clans of its ancestral houses, listing the names, every male, head by head.
Targum Onkelos
קַבִּילוּ יָת חוּשְׁבַּן כָּל כְּנִשְׁתָּא דִּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְזַרְעֲיָתְהוֹן לְבֵית אֲבָהָתְהוֹן בְּמִנְיַן שְׁמָהָן כָּל דְּכוּרָא לְגוּלְגְּלָתְהוֹן׃
Take a head count [the sum] of the entire congregation of Bnei Yisroel according to their families to the house of their fathers counting the names of all males individually.
- Numbers 1:3
מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה כׇּל־יֹצֵא צָבָא בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל תִּפְקְדוּ אֹתָם לְצִבְאֹתָם אַתָּה וְאַהֲרֹן׃
You and Aaron shall record them by their groups, from the age of twenty years up, all those in Israel who are able to bear arms.
Targum Onkelos
מִבַּר עֶשְׂרִין שְׁנִין וּלְעֵילָא כָּל נָפֵיק חֵילָא בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל תִּמְנוֹן יָתְהוֹן לְחֵילֵיהוֹן אַתְּ וְאַהֲרֹן׃
From twenty years old and above, all those eligible for the army [who go to war] of Israel, you shall count them according to their divisions, you and Aharon.
- Numbers 1:4
וְאִתְּכֶם יִהְיוּ אִישׁ אִישׁ לַמַּטֶּה אִישׁ רֹאשׁ לְבֵית־אֲבֹתָיו הוּא׃
Associated with you shall be a representative from every tribe, each one the head of his ancestral house.
Targum Onkelos
וְעִמְּכוֹן יְהוֹן גּוּבְרָא גּוּבְרָא לְשִׁבְטָא גְּבַר רֵישׁ לְבֵית אֲבָהָתוֹהִי הוּא׃
Along with you, there shall be one man for each tribe, each man shall be the head of his fathers’ house.
- Numbers 1:5
וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת הָאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר יַעַמְדוּ אִתְּכֶם לִרְאוּבֵן אֱלִיצוּר בֶּן־שְׁדֵיאוּר׃
These are the names of the men who shall assist you: From Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur.
Targum Onkelos
וְאִלֵּין שְׁמָהָת גּוּבְרַיָּא דִּיקוּמוּן עִמְּכוֹן לִרְאוּבֵן אֱלִיצוּר בַּר שְׁדֵיאוּר׃
These are the names of the men who shall stand along with you. For [the tribe of] Reuven, Elitzur the son of Shdeiur.

לְשִׁמְעוֹן שְׁלֻמִיאֵל בֶּן־צוּרִישַׁדָּי׃
From Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.
Targum Onkelos
לְשִׁמְעוֹן שְׁלוּמִיאֵל בַּר צוּרִישַׁדָּי׃
For [the tribe of] Shimon, Shlumiel the son of Tzurishadai.
- Numbers 1:7
לִיהוּדָה נַחְשׁוֹן בֶּן־עַמִּינָדָב׃
From Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab.
Targum Onkelos
לִיהוּדָה נַחְשׁוֹן בַּר עַמִּינָדָב׃
For [the tribe of] Yehudah, Nachshon the son of Aminadav.

לְיִשָּׂשכָר נְתַנְאֵל בֶּן־צוּעָר׃
From Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar.
Targum Onkelos
לְיִשָּׂשכָר נְתַנְאֵל בַּר צוּעָר׃
For [the tribe of] Yissachar, Nesanel the son of Tzu’ar.

לִזְבוּלֻן אֱלִיאָב בֶּן־חֵלֹן׃
From Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon.
Targum Onkelos
לִזְבוּלוּן אֱלִיאָב בַּר חֵלֹן׃
For [the tribe of] Zevulun, Eliav the son of Cheilon.

לִבְנֵי יוֹסֵף לְאֶפְרַיִם אֱלִישָׁמָע בֶּן־עַמִּיהוּד לִמְנַשֶּׁה גַּמְלִיאֵל בֶּן־פְּדָהצוּר׃
From the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.
Targum Onkelos
לִבְנֵי יוֹסֵף לְאֶפְרַיִם אֱלִישָׁמָע בַּר עַמִּיהוּד לִמְנַשֶּׁה גַּמְלִיאֵל בַּר פְּדָהצוּר׃
For the sons of Yoseif, for [the tribe of] Ephraim, Elishamah the son of Amihud. For [the tribe of] Menasheh, Gamliel the son of Pedahtzur.

לְבִנְיָמִן אֲבִידָן בֶּן־גִּדְעֹנִי׃
From Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni.

לְבִנְיָמִין אֲבִידָן בַּר גִּדְעוֹנִי׃
For [the tribe of] Binyamin, Avidan the son of Gid’oni.

לְדָן אֲחִיעֶזֶר בֶּן־עַמִּישַׁדָּי׃
From Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.

From Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel.

לְגָד אֶלְיָסָף בַּר דְּעוּאֵל׃
For [the tribe of] Gad, Elyasaf the son of De’uel.

לְנַפְתָּלִי אֲחִירַע בֶּן־עֵינָן׃
From Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan.
Targum Onkelos
לְנַפְתָּלִי אֲחִירַע בַּר עֵינָן׃
For [the tribe of] Naftali, Achira the son of Einan.
- Numbers 1:16
אֵלֶּה (קריאי) [קְרוּאֵי] הָעֵדָה נְשִׂיאֵי מַטּוֹת אֲבוֹתָם רָאשֵׁי אַלְפֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הֵם׃
Those are the elected of the assembly, the chieftains of their ancestral tribes: they are the heads of the contingents of Israel.
Targum Onkelos
אִלֵּין מְעָרְעֵי כְּנִשְׁתָּא רַבְרְבֵי שִׁבְטֵי אֲבָהָתְהוֹן רֵישֵׁי אַלְפַיָּא דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל אִנּוּן׃
These are the ones called from the congregation, the leaders of their fathers’ tribes; they are the heads of the thousands of Yisroel.
- Numbers 1:17
וַיִּקַּח מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן אֵת הָאֲנָשִׁים הָאֵלֶּה אֲשֶׁר נִקְּבוּ בְּשֵׁמֹת׃
So Moses and Aaron took those men who were designated by name,
Targum Onkelos
וּדְבַר מֹשֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן יָת גּוּבְרַיָּא הָאִלֵּין דְּאִתְפָּרַשׁוּ בִּשְׁמָהָן׃
Moshe and Aharon took these men who were designated by name.
- Numbers 1:18
וְאֵת כׇּל־הָעֵדָה הִקְהִילוּ בְּאֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִי וַיִּתְיַלְדוּ עַל־מִשְׁפְּחֹתָם לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם בְּמִסְפַּר שֵׁמוֹת מִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וָמַעְלָה לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָם׃
and on the first day of the second month they convoked the whole community, who were registered by the clans of their ancestral houses—the names of those aged twenty years and over being listed head by head.
Targum Onkelos
וְיָת כָּל כְּנִשְׁתָּא כְּנַשׁוּ בְּחַד לְיַרְחָא תִּנְיָנָא וְאִתְיַחַסוּ עַל זַרְעֲיָתְהוֹן לְבֵית אֲבָהָתְהוֹן בְּמִנְיַן שְׁמָהָן מִבַּר עֶשְׂרִין שְׁנִין וּלְעֵילָא לְגוּלְגְּלָתְהוֹן׃
They gathered together the entire congregation on the first [day] of the second month and they were registered by family ancestry according to the house of their fathers. according to the number of names each man of twenty years and above; individually.
- Numbers 1:19
כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהֹוָה אֶת־מֹשֶׁה וַיִּפְקְדֵם בְּמִדְבַּר סִינָי׃
As GOD had commanded Moses, so he recorded them in the wilderness of Sinai.
Targum Onkelos
כְּמָא דְּפַקֵּיד יְיָ יָת מֹשֶׁה וּמְנָנוּן בְּמַדְבְּרָא דְּסִינָי׃
Just as Adonoy commanded Moshe. He counted them in the Sinai desert.
