- Leviticus 16:1
וַיְדַבֵּר יְהֹוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה אַחֲרֵי מוֹת שְׁנֵי בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן בְּקׇרְבָתָם לִפְנֵי־יְהֹוָה וַיָּמֻתוּ׃
GOD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron who died when they drew too close to GOD’s presence.
Targum Onkelos
וּמַלֵּיל יְיָ עִם מֹשֶׁה בָּתַר דְּמִיתוּ תְּרֵין בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן בְּקָרוֹבֵיהוֹן אִישָׁתָא נוּכְרֵיתָא קֳדָם יְיָ וּמִיתוּ׃
And Adonoy spoke to Moshe after the death of two sons of Aharon, who brought an [unauthorized] offering [strange fire] before Adonoy and they died.
- Leviticus 16:2
וַיֹּאמֶר יְהֹוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה דַּבֵּר אֶל־אַהֲרֹן אָחִיךָ וְאַל־יָבֹא בְכׇל־עֵת אֶל־הַקֹּדֶשׁ מִבֵּית לַפָּרֹכֶת אֶל־פְּנֵי הַכַּפֹּרֶת אֲשֶׁר עַל־הָאָרֹן וְלֹא יָמוּת כִּי בֶּעָנָן אֵרָאֶה עַל־הַכַּפֹּרֶת׃
GOD said to Moses: Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come at will into the Shrine behind the curtain, in front of the cover that is upon the ark, lest he die; for I appear in the cloud over the cover.
Targum Onkelos
וַאֲמַר יְיָ לְמֹשֶׁה מַלֵּיל עִם אַהֲרֹן אֲחוּךְ וְלָא יְהֵי עָלֵיל בְּכָל עִדָּן לְקוּדְשָׁא מִגָּיו לְפָרוּכְתָּא לִקְדָם כָּפוּרְתָּא דְּעַל אֲרוֹנָא וְלָא יְמוּת אֲרֵי בַעֲנָנָא אֲנָא מִתְגְּלֵי עַל בֵּית כַּפּוֹרֵי׃
Adonoy spoke to Moshe: Speak to your brother Aharon that he not come at all times into the Holy [Sanctuary] that is inside of the Curtain, before the Ark-cover that is on the Ark so that he not die, for in a cloud I shall appear [become revealed] on the [House of the] Ark-cover.
- Leviticus 16:3
בְּזֹאת יָבֹא אַהֲרֹן אֶל־הַקֹּדֶשׁ בְּפַר בֶּן־בָּקָר לְחַטָּאת וְאַיִל לְעֹלָה׃
Thus only shall Aaron enter the Shrine: with a bull of the herd for a purgation offering and a ram for a burnt offering.—
Targum Onkelos
בְּדָא יְהֵי עָלֵיל אַהֲרֹן לְקוּדְשָׁא בְּתוֹר בַּר תּוֹרֵי לְחַטָּתָא וּדְכַר לַעֲלָתָא׃
With this shall Aharon come into the Holy [Sanctuary]; with a young bullock, for a sin-offering and a ram, for a burnt-offering.
- Leviticus 16:4
כְּתֹנֶת־בַּד קֹדֶשׁ יִלְבָּשׁ וּמִכְנְסֵי־בַד יִהְיוּ עַל־בְּשָׂרוֹ וּבְאַבְנֵט בַּד יַחְגֹּר וּבְמִצְנֶפֶת בַּד יִצְנֹף בִּגְדֵי־קֹדֶשׁ הֵם וְרָחַץ בַּמַּיִם אֶת־בְּשָׂרוֹ וּלְבֵשָׁם׃
He shall be dressed in a sacral linen tunic, with linen breeches next to his flesh, and be girt with a linen sash, and he shall wear a linen turban. They are sacral vestments; he shall bathe in water and then put them on.—
Targum Onkelos
כִּתּוּנָא דְּבוּצָא דְּקוּדְשָׁא יִלְבַּשׁ וּמִכְנְסִין דְּבוּץ יְהוֹן עַל בִּשְׂרֵיהּ וְהִמְיָנָא דְּבוּצָא יֵיסַר וּמַצְנַפְתָּא דְּבוּצָא יַחֵית בְּרֵישֵׁיהּ לְבוּשֵׁי קוּדְשָׁא אִנּוּן וְיַסְחֵי בְּמַיָּא יָת בִּשְׂרֵיהּ וְיִלְבְּשִׁנּוּן׃
He shall don a sanctified, linen tunic and linen pants shall be on his body. He shall gird himself with a linen sash and place a linen turban on his head. These are sacred garments; he shall bathe his body in water and clothe himself in them.
- Leviticus 16:5
וּמֵאֵת עֲדַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל יִקַּח שְׁנֵי־שְׂעִירֵי עִזִּים לְחַטָּאת וְאַיִל אֶחָד לְעֹלָה׃
And from the Israelite community he shall take two he-goats for a purgation offering and a ram for a burnt offering.
Targum Onkelos
וּמִן כְּנִשְׁתָּא דִּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל יִסַּב תְּרֵין צְפִירֵי עִזֵּי לְחַטָּתָא וּדְכַר חַד לַעֲלָתָא׃
He shall take, from the congregation of Israel two he-goats for sin-offerings and one ram for a burnt-offering.
- Leviticus 16:6
וְהִקְרִיב אַהֲרֹן אֶת־פַּר הַחַטָּאת אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ וְכִפֶּר בַּעֲדוֹ וּבְעַד בֵּיתוֹ׃
Aaron is to offer his own bull of purgation offering, to make expiation for himself and for his household.
Targum Onkelos
וִיקָרֵיב אַהֲרֹן יָת תּוֹרָא דְּחַטָּתָא דִּילֵיהּ וִיכַפַּר עֲלוֹהִי וְעַל אֱנָשׁ בֵּיתֵיהּ׃
Aharon shall bring the sin-offering bullock which is his and atone on his own behalf and on behalf of his household.
- Leviticus 16:7
וְלָקַח אֶת־שְׁנֵי הַשְּׂעִירִם וְהֶעֱמִיד אֹתָם לִפְנֵי יְהֹוָה פֶּתַח אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד׃
Aaron shall take the two he-goats and let them stand before GOD at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting;
Targum Onkelos
וְיִסַּב יָת תְּרֵין צְפִירִין וִיקִים יָתְהוֹן קֳדָם יְיָ בִּתְרַע מַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא׃
He shall take the two he-goats and stand them before Adonoy, at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.
- Leviticus 16:8
וְנָתַן אַהֲרֹן עַל־שְׁנֵי הַשְּׂעִירִם גֹּרָלוֹת גּוֹרָל אֶחָד לַיהֹוָה וְגוֹרָל אֶחָד לַעֲזָאזֵל׃
and he shall place lots upon the two goats, one marked for GOD and the other marked for Azazel.
Targum Onkelos
וְיִתֵּין אַהֲרֹן עַל תְּרֵין צְפִירִין עַדְבִּין עַדְבָּא חַד לִשְׁמָא דַּייָ וְעַדְבָּא חַד לַעֲזָאזֵל׃
Aharon shall put lots on the two he-goats; one lot [marked] for [the Name of] Adonoy and one lot [marked] for Azazel.
- Leviticus 16:9
וְהִקְרִיב אַהֲרֹן אֶת־הַשָּׂעִיר אֲשֶׁר עָלָה עָלָיו הַגּוֹרָל לַיהֹוָה וְעָשָׂהוּ חַטָּאת׃
Aaron shall bring forward the goat designated by lot for GOD, which he is to offer as a purgation offering;
Targum Onkelos
וִיקָרֵיב אַהֲרֹן יָת צְפִירָא דִּסְלֵיק עֲלוֹהִי עַדְבָּא לִשְׁמָא דַּייָ וְיַעְבְּדִנֵּיהּ חַטָּתָא׃
Aharon shall bring the goat upon which the lot [marked] for [the Name of] Adonoy came up and do (offer) it as a sin-offering.
- Leviticus 16:10
וְהַשָּׂעִיר אֲשֶׁר עָלָה עָלָיו הַגּוֹרָל לַעֲזָאזֵל יׇעֳמַד־חַי לִפְנֵי יְהֹוָה לְכַפֵּר עָלָיו לְשַׁלַּח אֹתוֹ לַעֲזָאזֵל הַמִּדְבָּרָה׃
while the goat designated by lot for Azazel shall be left standing alive before GOD, to make expiation with it and to send it off to the wilderness for Azazel.
Targum Onkelos
וּצְפִירָא דִּסְלֵיק עֲלוֹהִי עַדְבָּא לַעֲזָאזֵל יִתָּקַם כִּד חַי קֳדָם יְיָ לְכַפָּרָא עֲלוֹהִי לְשַׁלָּחָא יָתֵיהּ לַעֲזָאזֵל לְמַדְבְּרָא׃
The goat upon which came up the lot [marked] for Azazel shall be placed, alive, before Adonoy, to achieve atonement with it to send it to Azazel, in the desert.
- Leviticus 16:11
וְהִקְרִיב אַהֲרֹן אֶת־פַּר הַחַטָּאת אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ וְכִפֶּר בַּעֲדוֹ וּבְעַד בֵּיתוֹ וְשָׁחַט אֶת־פַּר הַחַטָּאת אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ׃
Aaron shall then offer his bull of purgation offering, to make expiation for himself and his household. He shall slaughter his bull of purgation offering,
Targum Onkelos
וִיקָרֵיב אַהֲרֹן יָת תּוֹרָא דְּחַטָּתָא דִּילֵיהּ וִיכַפַּר עֲלוֹהִי וְעַל אֱנָשׁ בֵּיתֵיהּ וְיִכּוֹס יָת תּוֹרָא דְּחַטָּתָא דִּילֵיהּ׃
Aharon shall bring the sin-offering-bullock which is his and atone on his behalf and on behalf of his household, and he shall slaughter his sin-offering-bullock.
- Leviticus 16:12
וְלָקַח מְלֹא־הַמַּחְתָּה גַּחֲלֵי־אֵשׁ מֵעַל הַמִּזְבֵּחַ מִלִּפְנֵי יְהֹוָה וּמְלֹא חׇפְנָיו קְטֹרֶת סַמִּים דַּקָּה וְהֵבִיא מִבֵּית לַפָּרֹכֶת׃
and he shall take a panful of glowing coals scooped from the altar before GOD, and two handfuls of finely ground aromatic incense, and bring this behind the curtain.
Targum Onkelos
וְיִסַּב מְלֵי מַחְתִּיתָא גּוּמְרִין דְּאִישָׁא מֵעִלָּוֵי מַדְבְּחָא מִן קֳדָם יְיָ וּמְלֵי חוּפְנוֹהִי קְטֹרֶת בּוּסְמִין דַּקִיקִין וְיַעֵיל מִגָּיו לְפָרוּכְתָּא׃
He shall take a full hand-shovel of fiery coals from atop the altar, which is before Adonoy and full handfuls of finely-ground incense and he shall bring [them] inside of the curtain.
- Leviticus 16:13
וְנָתַן אֶת־הַקְּטֹרֶת עַל־הָאֵשׁ לִפְנֵי יְהֹוָה וְכִסָּה ׀ עֲנַן הַקְּטֹרֶת אֶת־הַכַּפֹּרֶת אֲשֶׁר עַל־הָעֵדוּת וְלֹא יָמוּת׃
He shall put the incense on the fire before GOD, so that the cloud from the incense screens the cover that is over [the Ark of] the Pact, lest he die.
Targum Onkelos
וְיִתֵּין יָת קְטֹרֶת בּוּסְמַיָּא עַל אִישָׁתָא קֳדָם יְיָ וְיִחְפֵי עֲנַן קָטוּרְתָּא יָת כָּפוּרְתָּא דְּעַל סָהֲדוּתָא וְלָא יְמוּת׃
He shall put the incense [spices] on the fire before Adonoy and the cloud of incense will cover the Ark-cover that is on the [tablets of] Testimony, that he not die.
- Leviticus 16:14
וְלָקַח מִדַּם הַפָּר וְהִזָּה בְאֶצְבָּעוֹ עַל־פְּנֵי הַכַּפֹּרֶת קֵדְמָה וְלִפְנֵי הַכַּפֹּרֶת יַזֶּה שֶׁבַע־פְּעָמִים מִן־הַדָּם בְּאֶצְבָּעוֹ׃
He shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger over the cover on the east side; and in front of the cover he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.
Targum Onkelos
וְיִסַּב מִדְּמָא דְּתוֹרָא וְיַדֵּי בְאֶצְבְּעֵיהּ עַל אַפֵּי כָּפוּרְתָּא קִדּוּמָא וּקְדָם כָּפוּרְתָּא יַדֵּי שְׁבַע זִמְנִין מִן דְּמָא בְאֶצְבְּעֵיהּ׃
He shall take some of the bullocks blood and he shall sprinkle with his finger, above the surface of the Ark-cover on its eastern part; and before the Ark-cover, he shall sprinkle, some blood, with his finger, seven times.
- Leviticus 16:15
וְשָׁחַט אֶת־שְׂעִיר הַחַטָּאת אֲשֶׁר לָעָם וְהֵבִיא אֶת־דָּמוֹ אֶל־מִבֵּית לַפָּרֹכֶת וְעָשָׂה אֶת־דָּמוֹ כַּאֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה לְדַם הַפָּר וְהִזָּה אֹתוֹ עַל־הַכַּפֹּרֶת וְלִפְנֵי הַכַּפֹּרֶת׃
He shall then slaughter the people’s goat of purgation offering, bring its blood behind the curtain, and do with its blood as he has done with the blood of the bull: he shall sprinkle it over the cover and in front of the cover.
Targum Onkelos
וְיִכּוֹס יָת צְפִירָא דְּחַטָּתָא דִּלְעַמָּא וְיַעֵיל יָת דְּמֵיהּ לְמִגָּיו לְפָרוּכְתָּא וְיַעֲבֵיד לִדְמֵיהּ כְּמָא דַּעֲבַד לִדְמָא דְּתוֹרָא וְיַדֵּי יָתֵיהּ עַל כָּפוּרְתָּא וּקְדָם כָּפוּרְתָּא׃
He shall slaughter the he-goat sin-offering that belongs to the people, and he shall bring its blood inside of the Curtain. He shall do [with] its blood just as he did with the bullocks blood and he shall sprinkle it on the Ark-cover and before of the Ark-cover.
- Leviticus 16:16
וְכִפֶּר עַל־הַקֹּדֶשׁ מִטֻּמְאֹת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וּמִפִּשְׁעֵיהֶם לְכׇל־חַטֹּאתָם וְכֵן יַעֲשֶׂה לְאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד הַשֹּׁכֵן אִתָּם בְּתוֹךְ טֻמְאֹתָם׃
Thus he shall purge the Shrine of the impurity and transgression of the Israelites, whatever their sins; and he shall do the same for the Tent of Meeting, which abides with them in the midst of their impurity.
Targum Onkelos
וִיכַפַּר עַל קוּדְשָׁא מִסּוֹאֲבָת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וּמִמִּרְדֵּיהוֹן לְכָל חֲטָאֵיהוֹן וְכֵן יַעֲבֵיד לְמַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא דְּשָׁרֵי עִמְּהוֹן בְּגוֹ סוֹאֲבָתְהוֹן׃
He will atone for the Sanctuary, from the impurities of Bnei Yisroel and from their rebellious sins for all their transgressions. He shall do likewise for the Tent of Meeting, that dwells with them in the midst of their impurity.
- Leviticus 16:17
וְכׇל־אָדָם לֹא־יִהְיֶה ׀ בְּאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד בְּבֹאוֹ לְכַפֵּר בַּקֹּדֶשׁ עַד־צֵאתוֹ וְכִפֶּר בַּעֲדוֹ וּבְעַד בֵּיתוֹ וּבְעַד כׇּל־קְהַל יִשְׂרָאֵל׃
When he goes in to make expiation in the Shrine, nobody else shall be in the Tent of Meeting until he comes out. When he has made expiation for himself and his household, and for the whole congregation of Israel,
Targum Onkelos
וְכָל אֱנָשׁ לָא יְהֵי בְּמַשְׁכַּן זִמְנָא בְּמֵיעֲלֵיהּ לְכַפָּרָא בְּקוּדְשָׁא עַד מִפְּקֵיהּ וִיכַפַּר עֲלוֹהִי וְעַל אֱנָשׁ בֵּיתֵיהּ וְעַל כָּל קְהָלָא דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃
No man shall be present in the Tent of Meeting when he comes in to atone for the Holy [Sanctuary] until he leaves. He shall atone on his behalf and on behalf of his household and on behalf of the entire assembly of Israel.
