See, I have imparted to you laws and rules, as the ETERNAL my God has commanded me, for you to abide by in the land that you are about to enter and occupy.
Targum Onkelos
See, I have taught you statutes and laws as I was commanded by Adonoy, my God, to fulfill within the land that you are arriving there to inherit.
- Deuteronomy 4:6
Observe them faithfully, for that will be proof of your wisdom and discernment to other peoples, who on hearing of all these laws will say, “Surely, that great nation is a wise and discerning people.”
Targum Onkelos
You will preserve and you will fulfill [them], for that [displays] your wisdom and your understanding before the nations, who will hear all these statutes and will say, ‘‘The only wise and understanding people is this great nation.’’
- Deuteronomy 4:7
For what great nation is there that has a god so close at hand as is the ETERNAL our God whenever we call?
Targum Onkelos
For who is a great nation that has God close to it [to receive its prayers in time of tribulation] as [is] Adonoy, our God, whenever we call to [pray before] Him?
- Deuteronomy 4:8
Or what great nation has laws and rules as perfect as all this Teaching that I set before you this day?
Targum Onkelos
And who is a great nation that has upright statutes and laws, like this entire Torah that I am putting before you today?
- Deuteronomy 4:9
But take utmost care and watch yourselves scrupulously, so that you do not forget the things that you saw with your own eyes and so that they do not fade from your mind as long as you live. And make them known to your children and to your children’s children:
Targum Onkelos
Look out for yourself and guard your life exceedingly, lest you forget the words your eyes witnessed, and lest they are removed from your mind, all the days of your life; you will make them known to your children and to your grandchildren.
- Deuteronomy 4:10
The day you stood before the ETERNAL your God at Horeb, when GOD said to me, “Gather the people to Me that I may let them hear My words, in order that they may learn to revere Me as long as they live on earth, and may so teach their children.”
Targum Onkelos
The day you stood before Adonoy, your God, at Choreiv, when Adonoy said to me, ‘‘Assemble for [before] Me the people, and I will let them hear My statements, so that they will learn to fear Me all the years that they are living on the land, and will teach their sons.’’
- Deuteronomy 4:11
You came forward and stood at the foot of the mountain. The mountain was ablaze with flames to the very skies, dark with densest clouds.
Targum Onkelos
You approached and stood beneath [at the base of] the mountain, while the mountain was burning with fire up to the heart [height] of the heavens—darkness, cloud, and thick cloud.
- Deuteronomy 4:12
GOD spoke to you out of the fire; you heard the sound of words but perceived no shape—nothing but a voice.
Targum Onkelos
Adonoy addressed you from within the fire; you heard the sound of speech, seeing no image, solely sound.
- Deuteronomy 4:13
The covenant that you were commanded to observe, the Ten Commandments, was declared to you; and [God] inscribed them on two tablets of stone.
Targum Onkelos
He told you His covenant, which He commanded you to fulfill—the ten statements—and He wrote them on two tablets of stone.
- Deuteronomy 4:14
At the same time GOD commanded me to impart to you laws and rules for you to observe in the land that you are about to cross into and occupy.
Targum Onkelos
Adonoy commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and laws, for you to fulfill them in the land that you are crossing over there to inherit.
- Deuteronomy 4:15
For your own sake, therefore, be most careful—since you saw no shape when GOD spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire—
Targum Onkelos
Be extremely cautious for your lives, for you did not see any image on the day Adonoy addressed you at Choreiv from within the fire.
- Deuteronomy 4:16
not to act wickedly and make for yourselves a sculptured image in any likeness whatever: the form of a man or a woman,
Targum Onkelos
Lest you destructively make for yourselves a statue in the image of any form, the representation of a male or a female;
- Deuteronomy 4:17
the form of any animal on earth, the form of any winged bird that flies in the sky,
Targum Onkelos
[or] the representation of any animal that is on earth; [or] the representation of any winged bird that flies in [the air of the expanse of] the sky;
- Deuteronomy 4:18
the form of anything that creeps on the ground, the form of any fish that is in the waters below the earth.—
Targum Onkelos
[or] the representation of anything that crawls on the ground; [or] the representation of any fish that is in the water beneath the earth.
- Deuteronomy 4:19
And when you look up to the sky and behold the sun and the moon and the stars, the whole heavenly host, you must not be lured into bowing down to them or serving them. These the ETERNAL your God allotted to other peoples everywhere under heaven—
Targum Onkelos
Or lest you raise your eyes heavenward and see the sun or the moon or the stars—the entire host of the heavens—and you will err and bow to them and worship them, when Adonoy, your God, has made them available to all the peoples who are under the whole sky.
- Deuteronomy 4:20
whereas you were taken and brought out of Egypt, that iron blast furnace, to be GOD’s very own people, as is now the case.
Targum Onkelos
But Adonoy took you [for Himself] [drew you near to His service] when He took you out of the iron crucible, from Egypt, to be for Him a people-territory like this day.
- Deuteronomy 4:21
Now GOD was angry with me on your account and swore that I should not cross the Jordan and enter the good land that the ETERNAL your God is assigning you as a heritage.
Targum Onkelos

- Deuteronomy 4:22
For I must die in this land; I shall not cross the Jordan. But you will cross and take possession of that good land.
Targum Onkelos
For I am to die in this land, I am not crossing the Yardein; but you are crossing, and will inherit this good land.
- Deuteronomy 4:23
Take care, then, not to forget the covenant that the ETERNAL your God concluded with you, and not to make for yourselves a sculptured image in any likeness, against which the ETERNAL your God has enjoined you.
Targum Onkelos
Look out for yourselves lest you forget the covenant of Adonoy, your God, that He made with you, and you make for yourselves a statue—an image of anything—that Adonoy, your God, commanded you.
- Deuteronomy 4:24
For the ETERNAL your God is a consuming fire, an impassioned God.

For Adonoy, your God, [His word] is a consuming fire, a jealous Almighty.
- Deuteronomy 4:25
When you have begotten children and children’s children and are long established in the land, should you act wickedly and make for yourselves a sculptured image in any likeness, causing the ETERNAL your God displeasure and vexation,
Targum Onkelos
When you have children and grandchildren, and have grown old in the land; and you will be corrupt and make a statue—an image of anything—and do what is evil in the eyes of [before] Adonoy, your God, to anger [before] Him.
- Deuteronomy 4:26
I call heaven and earth this day to witness against you that you shall soon perish from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess; you shall not long endure in it, but shall be utterly wiped out.
Targum Onkelos

I bring as witness against you today heaven and earth, that you will be completely and swiftly removed from upon the land, that you are crossing the Yardein there to inherit; you will not live long upon it, but will be completely destroyed.
- Deuteronomy 4:27
GOD will scatter you among the peoples, and only a scant few of you shall be left among the nations to which GOD will drive you.
Targum Onkelos
Adonoy will disperse you among the peoples, and you will remain few in number among the nations that Adonoy leads you to.
- Deuteronomy 4:28
There you will serve gods of wood and stone, made by human hands, that cannot see or hear or eat or smell.

There you will serve [a nation who serves] man-made gods of wood and stone that do not see, do not hear, do not eat, and do not smell.
- Deuteronomy 4:29
But if you search there, you will find the ETERNAL your God, if only you seek with all your heart and soul—
Targum Onkelos
You will seek from there [the fear of] Adonoy, your God, and you will find [Him], when you seek [before] Him wholeheartedly and with your whole being.
- Deuteronomy 4:30
when you are in distress because all these things have befallen you and, in the end, return to and obey the ETERNAL your God.
Targum Onkelos

For a merciful Almighty is Adonoy, your God; He will not forsake you nor destroy you; nor will He forget the covenant of your fathers that He swore to them.
- Deuteronomy 4:32
You have but to inquire about bygone ages that came before you, ever since God created humankind on earth, from one end of heaven to the other: has anything as grand as this ever happened, or has its like ever been known?
Targum Onkelos
Inquire now about the early years that preceded you, from the day that God created Adam on earth and from one end of the heavens to the other end of the heavens: Did anything ever happen comparable to this great event, or did anyone ever hear of such a thing?
- Deuteronomy 4:33
Has any people heard the voice of a god speaking out of a fire, as you have, and survived?
Targum Onkelos
Did any people [ever] hear [the word of] God’s voice speaking from within the fire as you heard and survive?
- Deuteronomy 4:34
Or has any deity ventured to go and take one nation from the midst of another by prodigious acts, by signs and portents, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and awesome power, as the ETERNAL your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?
Targum Onkelos
Or [miracles that He performed to become revealed,] did any god ever miraculously come and take for himself a nation from within a nation through tests, with signs and with wonders, and through warfare, and with a strong hand and with an extended arm, and with great displays; entirely as Adonoy, your God, did for you in Egypt as you watched?
- Deuteronomy 4:35
It has been clearly demonstrated to you that the ETERNAL alone is God; there is none else.
Targum Onkelos
You have been shown that you might know that Adonoy, He is the God; there is no [power] other than He.
- Deuteronomy 4:36
From the heavens you could hear the divine voice to discipline you; on earth you could see the great divine fire; and from amidst that fire you heard God’s words.
Targum Onkelos
From the sky He made audible to you [the word of] His voice to teach you, and on the earth He showed you His great fire, and you heard His words form within the fire.
- Deuteronomy 4:37
And out of love for your ancestors, [God] chose their heirs after them—directly leading you out of Egypt with great might,
Targum Onkelos
Because He loved your forefathers, He chose his descendants after him; and He took you out before Him [by His word] with His great strength from Egypt.
- Deuteronomy 4:38
to drive from your path nations greater and more populous than you, to take you into their land and assign it to you as a heritage, as is still the case.
Targum Onkelos
To expel nations greater and stronger than you from before you; to bring you in [and] to give you their land as terrritory, like this day.
- Deuteronomy 4:39
Know therefore this day and keep in mind that the ETERNAL alone is God in heaven above and on earth below; there is no other.
Targum Onkelos
You will know today, and will restore to your perception that Adonoy is the God [Whose Shechinah is] in heaven above and [Ruler] on earth below; there is no other.
- Deuteronomy 4:40
Observe God’s laws and commandments, which I enjoin upon you this day, that it may go well with you and your children after you, and that you may long remain in the land that the ETERNAL your God is assigning to you for all time.
Targum Onkelos
You will guard His statutes and His commandments, which I am commanding you today, so that you have it good and your children after you, and in order that you live long on the land that Adonoy, your God, is giving you for all time.
