- Numbers 13:1
וַיְדַבֵּר יְהֹוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר׃
GOD spoke to Moses, saying,
Targum Onkelos
וּמַלֵּיל יְיָ עִם מֹשֶׁה לְמֵימַר׃
And Adonoy spoke to Moshe, saying;
- Numbers 13:2
שְׁלַח־לְךָ אֲנָשִׁים וְיָתֻרוּ אֶת־אֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן אֲשֶׁר־אֲנִי נֹתֵן לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אִישׁ אֶחָד אִישׁ אֶחָד לְמַטֵּה אֲבֹתָיו תִּשְׁלָחוּ כֹּל נָשִׂיא בָהֶם׃
“Send agents to scout the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelite people; send someone from each of their ancestral tribes, each one a chieftain among them.”
Targum Onkelos
שְׁלַח לָךְ גּוּבְרִין וִיאַלְּלוּן יָת אַרְעָא דִּכְנַעַן דַּאֲנָא יָהֵיב לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל גּוּבְרָא חַד גּוּבְרָא חַד לְשִׁבְטָא דַּאֲבָהָתוֹהִי תִּשְׁלְחוּן כֹּל רַבָּא דִּבְהוֹן׃
“Send, for yourself, men, and have them scout the Land of Cana’an, which I am giving to Bnei Yisroel; one man, one man each, for his father’s tribe you shall send them, each leader among them.”
- Numbers 13:3
וַיִּשְׁלַח אֹתָם מֹשֶׁה מִמִּדְבַּר פָּארָן עַל־פִּי יְהֹוָה כֻּלָּם אֲנָשִׁים רָאשֵׁי בְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל הֵמָּה׃
So Moses, by GOD’s command, sent them out from the wilderness of Paran—all of them being men of consequence, leaders of the Israelites.
Targum Onkelos
וּשְׁלַח יָתְהוֹן מֹשֶׁה מִמַּדְבְּרָא דְּפָארָן עַל מֵימְרָא דַּייָ כּוּלְּהוֹן גּוּבְרִין רֵישֵׁי בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אִנּוּן׃
Moshe sent them from the desert of Paran by the word of Adonoy; all of them [were] men of distinction, they were the heads of Bnei Yisroel.
- Numbers 13:4
וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹתָם לְמַטֵּה רְאוּבֵן שַׁמּוּעַ בֶּן־זַכּוּר׃
And these were their names: From the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur.
Targum Onkelos
וְאִלֵּין שְׁמָהָתְהוֹן לְשִׁבְטָא דִּרְאוּבֵן שַׁמּוּעַ בַּר זַכּוּר׃
These are their names; for the tribe of Reuven, Shamua the son of Zaccur.
- Numbers 13:5
לְמַטֵּה שִׁמְעוֹן שָׁפָט בֶּן־חוֹרִי׃
From the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori.
Targum Onkelos
לְשִׁבְטָא דְּשִׁמְעוֹן שָׁפָט בַּר חוֹרִי׃
For the tribe of Shimon, Shafat the son of Chori.
- Numbers 13:6
לְמַטֵּה יְהוּדָה כָּלֵב בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּה׃
From the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh.
Targum Onkelos
לְשִׁבְטָא דִּיהוּדָה כָּלֵב בַּר יְפֻנֶּה׃
For the tribe of Yehudah, Caleiv the son of Yefuneh.
- Numbers 13:7
לְמַטֵּה יִשָּׂשכָר יִגְאָל בֶּן־יוֹסֵף׃
From the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph.
Targum Onkelos
לְשִׁבְטָא דְּיִשָּׂשכָר יִגְאָל בַּר יוֹסֵף׃
For the tribe of Yissachar, Yigal the son of Yoseif.
- Numbers 13:8
לְמַטֵּה אֶפְרָיִם הוֹשֵׁעַ בִּן־נוּן׃
From the tribe of Ephraim, Hosea son of Nun.
Targum Onkelos
לְשִׁבְטָא דְּאֶפְרַיִם הוֹשֵׁעַ בַּר נוּן׃
For the tribe of Ephraim, Hosheiah the son of Nun.
- Numbers 13:9
לְמַטֵּה בִנְיָמִן פַּלְטִי בֶּן־רָפוּא׃
From the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Rafu.
Targum Onkelos
לְשִׁבְטָא דְּבִנְיָמִין פַּלְטִי בַּר רָפוּא׃
For the tribe of Binyamin, Palti the son of Raphu.
- Numbers 13:10
לְמַטֵּה זְבוּלֻן גַּדִּיאֵל בֶּן־סוֹדִי׃
From the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi.
Targum Onkelos
לְשִׁבְטָא דִּזְבוּלוּן גַּדִּיאֵל בַּר סוֹדִי׃
For the tribe of Zevulun, Gadiel the son of Sodi.
- Numbers 13:11
לְמַטֵּה יוֹסֵף לְמַטֵּה מְנַשֶּׁה גַּדִּי בֶּן־סוּסִי׃
From the tribe of Joseph, namely, the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi.
Targum Onkelos
לְשִׁבְטָא דְּיוֹסֵף לְשִׁבְטָא דִּמְנַשֶּׁה גַּדִּי בַּר סוּסִי׃
For the tribe of Yoseif, for the tribe of Menashe, Gadi the son of Susi.
- Numbers 13:12
לְמַטֵּה דָן עַמִּיאֵל בֶּן־גְּמַלִּי׃
From the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli.
Targum Onkelos
לְשִׁבְטָא דְּדָן עַמִּיאֵל בַּר גְּמַלִּי׃
For the tribe of Don, Amiel the son of Gemali.

לְמַטֵּה אָשֵׁר סְתוּר בֶּן־מִיכָאֵל׃
From the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael.

לְשִׁבְטָא דְּאָשֵׁר סְתוּר בַּר מִיכָאֵל׃
For the tribe of Asher, Sesur the son of Michael.

לְמַטֵּה נַפְתָּלִי נַחְבִּי בֶּן־וׇפְסִי׃
From the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi.

לְשִׁבְטָא דְּנַפְתָּלִי נַחְבִּי בַּר וָפְסִי׃
For the tribe of Naftali, Nachbi the son of Vofsi.

לְמַטֵּה גָד גְּאוּאֵל בֶּן־מָכִי׃
From the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Machi.
Targum Onkelos
לְשִׁבְטָא דְּגָד גְּאוּאֵל בַּר מָכִי׃
For the tribe of Gad, Geu’el the son of Machi.
- Numbers 13:16
אֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת הָאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר־שָׁלַח מֹשֶׁה לָתוּר אֶת־הָאָרֶץ וַיִּקְרָא מֹשֶׁה לְהוֹשֵׁעַ בִּן־נוּן יְהוֹשֻׁעַ׃
These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to scout the land; but Moses changed the name of Hosea son of Nun to Joshua.
Targum Onkelos
אִלֵּין שְׁמָהָת גּוּבְרַיָּא דִּשְׁלַח מֹשֶׁה לְאַלָּלָא יָת אַרְעָא וּקְרָא מֹשֶׁה לְהוֹשֵׁעַ בַּר נוּן יְהוֹשֻעַ׃
These are the names of the men whom Moshe sent to scout the land, and Moshe called Hosheiah the son of Nun, Yehoshua.
- Numbers 13:17
וַיִּשְׁלַח אֹתָם מֹשֶׁה לָתוּר אֶת־אֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם עֲלוּ זֶה בַּנֶּגֶב וַעֲלִיתֶם אֶת־הָהָר׃
When Moses sent them to scout the land of Canaan, he said to them, “Go up there into the Negeb and on into the hill country,
Targum Onkelos
וּשְׁלַח יָתְהוֹן מֹשֶׁה לְאַלָּלָא יָת אַרְעָא דִּכְנָעַן וַאֲמַר לְהוֹן סַקוּ דָּא בְּדָרוֹמָא וְתִסְּקוּן לְטוּרָא׃
Moshe sent them to scout the land of Cana’an and he said to them: “Go up this [way], to the south and go up to the mountain.
- Numbers 13:18
וּרְאִיתֶם אֶת־הָאָרֶץ מַה־הִוא וְאֶת־הָעָם הַיֹּשֵׁב עָלֶיהָ הֶחָזָק הוּא הֲרָפֶה הַמְעַט הוּא אִם־רָב׃
and see what kind of country it is. Are the people who dwell in it strong or weak, few or many?
Targum Onkelos
וְתִחְזוֹן יָת אַרְעָא מָא הִיא וְיָת עַמָּא דְּיָתֵיב עֲלַהּ הֲתַקִּיף הוּא אִם חַלָּשׁ הַזְעֵיר הוּא אִם סַגִּי׃
See what the land is; and the people living on it; are they strong or weak, if they are few or many;
- Numbers 13:19
וּמָה הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר־הוּא יֹשֵׁב בָּהּ הֲטוֹבָה הִוא אִם־רָעָה וּמָה הֶעָרִים אֲשֶׁר־הוּא יוֹשֵׁב בָּהֵנָּה הַבְּמַחֲנִים אִם בְּמִבְצָרִים׃
Is the country in which they dwell good or bad? Are the towns they live in open or fortified?
Targum Onkelos
וּמָא אַרְעָא דְּהוּא יָתֵיב בַּהּ הֲטָבָא הִיא אִם בִּישָׁא וּמָא קִרְוַיָּא דְּהוּא יָתֵיב בְּהוֹן הַבְּפַצְחִין אִם בְּכַּרְכִין׃
and how is the land in which they live, is it good, or bad? And how are the cities in which they reside; are they open, or are they fortified [walled-in]?
- Numbers 13:20
וּמָה הָאָרֶץ הַשְּׁמֵנָה הִוא אִם־רָזָה הֲיֵשׁ־בָּהּ עֵץ אִם־אַיִן וְהִתְחַזַּקְתֶּם וּלְקַחְתֶּם מִפְּרִי הָאָרֶץ וְהַיָּמִים יְמֵי בִּכּוּרֵי עֲנָבִים׃
Is the soil rich or poor? Is it wooded or not? And take pains to bring back some of the fruit of the land.”—Now it happened to be the season of the first ripe grapes.
Targum Onkelos
וּמָא אַרְעָא הֲעַתִּירָא הִיא אִם מִסְכֵּינָא הֲאִית בַּהּ אִילָנִין אִם לָא וְתִתַּקְּפוּן וְתִסְּבוּן מֵאִבָּא דְּאַרְעָא וְיוֹמַיָּא יוֹמֵי בִּכּוּרֵי עִנְבִּין׃
How is the land (soil) is it fat (rich) or lean (poor), does it have trees, or not? You shall strengthen yourselves, and you shall take some fruit of the land.” Those days were the days of the first ripening of the grapes.
