- Deuteronomy 15:1
Every seventh year you shall practice remission of debts.
Targum Onkelos
At the end of seven years, you are to make shemitah.
- Deuteronomy 15:2
This shall be the nature of the remission: all creditors shall remit the due that they claim from their fellow Israelites; they shall not dun their fellow Israelites—their kindred—for the remission proclaimed is of GOD.
Targum Onkelos
And this is the statement of shemitah: suspend every creditor’s hand from his loan to his neighbor; he will not claim [it] from his neighbor or his brother because it was proclaimed shemitah to [before] Adonoy.
- Deuteronomy 15:3
You may dun the foreigner; but you must remit whatever is due you from your kindred.
Targum Onkelos
You should demand payment from the stranger [foreigner], but what you have with your brother your hand will relinquish.
- Deuteronomy 15:4
There shall be no needy among you—since the ETERNAL your God will bless you in the land that the ETERNAL your God is giving you as a hereditary portion—
Targum Onkelos
End it [poverty], so that there will be no one, destitute among you when Adonoy will surely bless you in the land that Adonoy, your God, is giving you as territory to inherit.
- Deuteronomy 15:5
if only you heed the ETERNAL your God and take care to keep all this Instruction that I enjoin upon you this day.
Targum Onkelos
Only if you will listen to [heed] the voice [word] of Adonoy, your God, to guard to fulfill this entire mitzvah that I am commanding you today.
- Deuteronomy 15:6
For the ETERNAL your God will bless you as promised: you will extend loans to many nations, but require none yourself; you will dominate many nations, but they will not dominate you.
Targum Onkelos
When Adonoy, your God, blesses you just as He told you, you will grant loans to nations but you will not borrow; and you will rule over many nations, but over you they will not rule.
- Deuteronomy 15:7
If, however, there is a needy person among you, one of your kindred in any of your settlements in the land that the ETERNAL your God is giving you, do not harden your heart and shut your hand against your needy kindred.
Targum Onkelos
If there should be someone destitute in your midst among one of your brothers in one of your cities, in your land that Adonoy, your God, is giving you; do not harden your heart and do not close your hand against your destitute brother.
- Deuteronomy 15:8
Rather, you must open your hand and lend whatever is sufficient to meet the need.
Targum Onkelos
Rather, you must surely open your hand generously to him, and you must surely extend a loan to him to cover the wants [the measure of that] which he lacks.
- Deuteronomy 15:9
Beware lest you harbor the base thought, “The seventh year, the year of remission, is approaching,” so that you are mean and give nothing to your needy kindred—who will cry out to GOD against you, and you will incur guilt.
Targum Onkelos
Look out for yourself lest there be an evil thought in your mind, saying, ‘‘The seventh year is approaching, the shemitah year,’’ and you will look askance at your destitute brother and will not give him; and if he cries out concerning you to Adonoy, you will be regarded as sinful.
- Deuteronomy 15:10
Give readily and have no regrets when you do so, for in return the ETERNAL your God will bless you in all your efforts and in all your undertakings.
Targum Onkelos
You must surely give him, and let your heart not hurt when you give him; for, as a consequence of this thing, Adonoy, your God, will bless you in all your work and in all your commerce.
- Deuteronomy 15:11
For there will never cease to be needy ones in your land, which is why I command you: open your hand to the poor and needy kindred in your land.
Targum Onkelos
For the destitute will not cease to exist within the land; therefore I am commanding you saying, ‘‘Open your hand generously to your brother, to your indigent, and to your destitute in your land.’’
- Deuteronomy 15:12
If any fellow Hebrew, man or woman, is sold to you, they shall serve you six years, and in the seventh year you shall set them free.
Targum Onkelos
If your brother—Jew or Jewess—is sold to you and he serves you six years; then in the seventh year you are to send him free from you.
- Deuteronomy 15:13
When you set them free, do not let them go empty-handed:
Targum Onkelos
When you send him [a] free [man] from you, do not send him away empty-handed.
- Deuteronomy 15:14
Furnish them out of the flock, threshing floor, and vat, with which the ETERNAL your God has blessed you.
Targum Onkelos
You must surely present him with a severance bonus from your flocks, and from your threshing area, and your wine cellar, whatever Adonoy, your God, has blessed you with are you to give him.
- Deuteronomy 15:15
Bear in mind that you were slaves in the land of Egypt and the ETERNAL your God redeemed you; therefore I enjoin this commandment upon you today.
Targum Onkelos
Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt and Adonoy, your God, redeemed you; that is why I am commanding you this matter today.
- Deuteronomy 15:16
But should they say to you, “I do not want to leave you”—for they love you and your household and are happy with you—
Targum Onkelos
Should he say to you, ‘‘I am not leaving you;’’ because he loves you and [the members of] your household, for he has it good with you.
- Deuteronomy 15:17
you shall take an awl and put it through their ear into the door, and they shall become your slave in perpetuity. Do this even with your female slave.
Targum Onkelos
Take the awl and put it through his ear and the door, and he will become your perpetual slave [ministering servant]. And do the same to your maid-servant as well.
- Deuteronomy 15:18
When you do set them free, do not feel aggrieved; for in the six years you have been given double the service of a hired worker. Moreover, the ETERNAL your God will bless you in all you do.
Targum Onkelos
Let it not seem difficult to you when you send him [a] free [man] from you, for double [two for one] the profit produced by the wage earner has he worked for you six years; and Adonoy, your God, will bless you in everything you do.
