  1. Deuteronomy 9:4

And when the ETERNAL your God has thrust them from your path, say not to yourselves, “GOD has enabled us to possess this land because of our virtues”; it is rather because of the wickedness of those nations that GOD is dispossessing them before you.

    Targum Onkelos

Do not think, when Adonoy, your God, smashes them before you, saying: ‘‘Because of my righteousness [merit] has Adonoy brought me to inherit this land,’’ and because of the wickedness [sins] of these nations is Adonoy expelling them before you.

  2. Deuteronomy 9:5

It is not because of your virtues and your rectitude that you will be able to possess their country; but it is because of their wickedness that the ETERNAL your God is dispossessing those nations before you, and in order to fulfill the oath that GOD made to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

    Targum Onkelos

Not because of your righteousness [merit] and the uprightness of your heart are you coming to inherit their land. Rather, because of the wickedness [sins] of these nations is Adonoy, your God, expelling them before you, and in order to fulfill the matter that Adonoy swore to your forefathers—to Avrohom, to Yitzchok, and to Yaakov.

  3. Deuteronomy 9:6

Know, then, that it is not for any virtue of yours that the ETERNAL your God is giving you this good land to possess; for you are a stiffnecked people.

    Targum Onkelos

Know that not because of your righteousness is Adonoy, your God, giving you this good land to inherit, for you are a stubborn people.

  4. Deuteronomy 9:7

Remember, never forget, how you provoked the ETERNAL your God to anger in the wilderness: from the day that you left the land of Egypt until you reached this place, you have continued defiant toward GOD.

    Targum Onkelos

Recall, do not forget, how you angered Adonoy, your God, in the wilderness; from the day you left the land of Egypt until you arrived at this place you have been defiers with Adonoy.

  5. Deuteronomy 9:8

At Horeb you so provoked GOD that GOD was angry enough with you to have destroyed you.

    Targum Onkelos

And in Choreiv you angered Adonoy, and [from before] Adonoy was infuriated with you to destroy you.

  6. Deuteronomy 9:9

I had ascended the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the Tablets of the Covenant that GOD had made with you, and I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights, eating no bread and drinking no water.

    Targum Onkelos

When I went up the mountain to take the stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant that Adonoy made with you, I remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water.

  7. Deuteronomy 9:10

And the ETERNAL gave me the two tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God, with the exact words that the ETERNAL had addressed to you on the mountain out of the fire on the day of the Assembly.

    Targum Onkelos

Adonoy gave me the two stone tablets written with God’s finger and upon them all the statements that Adonoy addressed to you on the mountain from within the fire, on the day of assembly.

  8. Deuteronomy 9:11

At the end of those forty days and forty nights, GOD gave me the two tablets of stone, the Tablets of the Covenant.

    Targum Onkelos

When, at the end of forty days and forty nights, Adonoy gave me the two stone tablets, the covenant tablets,

  9. Deuteronomy 9:12

And GOD said to me, “Hurry, go down from here at once, for the people whom you brought out of Egypt have acted wickedly; they have been quick to stray from the path that I enjoined upon them; they have made themselves a molten image.”

    Targum Onkelos

Adonoy said to me, ‘‘Get ready! Go down quickly from here, because your people has corrupted—whom you took out of Egypt; they have veered swiftly from the way that I commanded them; they made them a molten image.

  10. Deuteronomy 9:13

GOD further said to me, “I see that this is a stiffnecked people.

    Targum Onkelos

Adonoy said to me, to say, ‘‘I have seen this people [have been revealed berore Me], and look, it is a stubborn people!

  11. Deuteronomy 9:14

Let Me alone and I will destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven, and I will make you a nation far more numerous than they.”

    Targum Onkelos

Leave Me alone and let Me destroy them and eliminate their name from beneath the sky, and let Me make you into a nation more powerful and numerous than they.’’

  12. Deuteronomy 9:15

I started down the mountain, a mountain ablaze with fire, the two Tablets of the Covenant in my two hands.

    Targum Onkelos

I turned and descended the mountain, and the mountain was burning with fire; and the two covenant tablets were on my two hands.

  13. Deuteronomy 9:16

I saw how you had sinned against the ETERNAL your God: you had made yourselves a molten calf; you had been quick to stray from the path that GOD had enjoined upon you.

    Targum Onkelos

I beheld that you had just sinned to Adonoy, your God, you had made yourselves a molten calf; you had veered swiftly from the way that Adonoy had commanded you.

  14. Deuteronomy 9:17

Thereupon I gripped the two tablets and flung them away with both my hands, smashing them before your eyes.

    Targum Onkelos

I grasped the two tablets and threw them from (upon) my two hands, and smashed them before your eyes.

  15. Deuteronomy 9:18

I threw myself down before GOD—eating no bread and drinking no water forty days and forty nights, as before—because of the great wrong you had committed, doing what displeased and vexed GOD.

    Targum Onkelos

I prostrated myself before Adonoy as before, forty days and forty nights, bread I did not eat nor water did I drink; for all of your sin that you sinned by doing what is evil in [before] Adonoy’s eyes to anger [before] Him.

  16. Deuteronomy 9:19

For I was in dread of the fierce anger against you that moved GOD to wipe you out. And that time, too, GOD gave heed to me.—

    Targum Onkelos

Because I was afraid of the anger and the fury that Adonoy raged at you to destroy you; and Adonoy accepted my prayer that time as well.

  17. Deuteronomy 9:20

Moreover, GOD was angry enough with Aaron to have destroyed him; so I also interceded for Aaron at that time.—

    Targum Onkelos

And at Aharon [from before] Adonoy [He] grew very angry to destroy him; I prayed for Aharon, too, at that time.

  18. Deuteronomy 9:21

As for that sinful thing you had made, the calf, I took it and put it to the fire; I broke it to bits and ground it thoroughly until it was fine as dust, and I threw its dust into the brook that comes down from the mountain.

    Targum Onkelos

And the sin[-object] that you made, the calf, I took and burned it in fire. I crushed it—thoroughly grinding it—until it was fine—to dust; and I threw its dust into the stream that was flowing down from the mountain.

  19. Deuteronomy 9:22

Again you provoked GOD at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah.

    Targum Onkelos

And in Tav’eiroh and in Massoh and in Kivros Hata’voh you were angerers of [before] Adonoy.

  20. Deuteronomy 9:23

And when GOD sent you on from Kadesh-barnea, saying, “Go up and take possession of the land that I am giving you,” you flouted the command of the ETERNAL your God—whom you did not put your trust in nor obey.

    Targum Onkelos

And when Adonoy sent you from Kodeish Barnei’a [Rekam Geyah], saying, ‘‘Go up and inherit the land that I have given you.’’ But you defied [the decree of the word of] Adonoy, your God, and did not trust Him, and did not heed Him [accept His word].

  21. Deuteronomy 9:24

As long as I have known you, you have been defiant toward GOD.

    Targum Onkelos

Defiers have you been with Adonoy, from the day I know you.

  22. Deuteronomy 9:25

When I lay prostrate before GOD those forty days and forty nights, because GOD was determined to destroy you,

    Targum Onkelos

I prostrated myself before Adonoy the forty days and the forty nights that I prostrated myself, because Adonoy intended to destroy you.

  23. Deuteronomy 9:26

I prayed to GOD and said, “O my Sovereign GOD, do not annihilate Your very own people, whom You redeemed in Your majesty and whom You freed from Egypt with a mighty hand.

    Targum Onkelos

I prayed to Adonoy and said, ‘‘Adonoy, God, do not harm Your people and Your territory that You redeemed with Your power, whom You took out of Egypt with a powerful hand.

  24. Deuteronomy 9:27

Give thought to Your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and pay no heed to the stubbornness of this people, its wickedness, and its sinfulness.

    Targum Onkelos

Recall Your servants—Avrohom, Yitzchok, and Yaakov; do not pay attention to the stubborness of this people, to its wickedness, and to its sin.

  25. Deuteronomy 9:28

Else the country from which You freed us will say, ‘It was because GOD was powerless to bring them into the land promised to them, and because of having rejected them, that he brought them out to have them die in the wilderness.’

    Targum Onkelos

Lest [the inhabitants] say—[of] the land that you took us out of—‘Because of Adonony’s inability to bring them [up] to the land that He promised for them, and because of His hatred of them, He took them out to kill them in the wilderness.’

  26. Deuteronomy 9:29

Yet they are Your very own people, whom You freed with Your great might and Your outstretched arm.”

    Targum Onkelos

But they are Your people, Your territory, whom You took out with Your great power and with Your extended arm.’’
