Have you ever wondered why the Haggadah says that if G-d had only brought the Jewish people to Mount Sinai, but had not given us the Torah, it would have been enough? What would have been so special about simply arriving at Sinai?
The Torah says, “And Israel camped there” using the singular word vayichan. Rashi explains that unlike their other journeys, the Jewish people arrived at Sinai “as one person, with one heart.” They put aside their arguments and came together in unity.
The lesson is that sometimes, simply coming together is already something incredibly valuable. When people stop focusing only on themselves and start caring about one another, they become something greater than a collection of individuals.
There is a famous play on the words “united” and “untied.” The difference is where you put the “I.” When I put myself first, I become “untied” from others. But when I put the “I” aside and care about my fellow Jew, we become truly united.
