Moshe blessed each tribe according to its unique strengths and responsibilities. When blessing Yoseph, he described him as “the one separated from his brothers.” But why is being separated from his brothers considered a praise?
Our values are often shaped by the people and environment around us. Yoseph had the advantage of growing up in Yaakov’s home, but he was separated from his family at a young age and brought to Egypt, a society steeped in immorality and idol worship. Yet despite his surroundings, Yoseph remained committed to his values and became known as Yoseph HaTzaddik.
This teaches us that our true strengths are often revealed when we leave our comfort zones. When everyone is sitting together, we may all appear the same. It is only when everyone gets up and goes in different directions that our individual strengths become clear.
True greatness is not simply staying strong in a good environment—it is remaining true to your values even when your environment challenges them.
