Have you ever felt such a strong emotion that you didn't know what to do with it?
In Parshat Vayigash, Yaakov finally reunites with Yosef after 22 years apart. Yosef hugs his father and cries, but Yaakov doesn't hug Yosef back. The Midrash explains that Yaakov was reciting Shema. Why would Yaakov choose that moment to say Shema instead of embracing his long-lost son?
One explanation is that Yaakov was channeling his emotions toward G-d. He was overwhelmed with love and happiness, and instead of letting those feelings remain focused only on Yosef, he used them to strengthen his connection with G-d.
This teaches us that our emotions can be powerful tools. Happiness, excitement, and even strong desires don't have to control us. We can choose where to direct that energy.
The goal isn't to get rid of our emotions, but to use them in a positive way.
