Have you ever been given a great opportunity but decided it was too much work?
In Parshat Toldot, Eisav comes home exhausted and sees Yaakov cooking a stew. Yaakov offers to give him the stew in exchange for the birthright. Eisav agrees, and afterward, the Torah says that Eisav “despised the birthright.” But why? Rashi explains that Eisav knew the birthright came with serious responsibilities, including serving in the Temple. If he was worried about those responsibilities, why does the Torah say he despised it?
Perhaps the answer is that giving up an opportunity because it is difficult is itself a form of disrespect. The birthright could have allowed Eisav to take on an important role, but he chose what was easier in the moment.
Life gives us opportunities to grow, help others, and accomplish something meaningful. Sometimes they come with hard work, but that doesn't make them less valuable.
When a meaningful opportunity comes your way, don't let the difficulty stop you from taking it.
