Have you ever wondered why the Torah demands that the oil used for the Menorah be completely pure, when any impurities could simply be filtered out later?
In this week's parsha, the Torah commands the Jewish people to bring Moshe pure olive oil to light the Menorah. The oil had to come from the first drop produced by gently pressing the olive. Only afterward could the olives be crushed and their oil used for other purposes. Why was the Menorah held to such a high standard?
The Menorah represents our minds and the light of Torah. Just as the Menorah required the purest oil, the Torah teaches us that we need to be careful about what we allow into our minds.
We may be careful to eat only kosher food, but we should also ask ourselves: Is the information and entertainment I consume healthy for my mind and soul?
Our minds are precious. If we fill them with pure and meaningful ideas, they can become a source of tremendous light. Just as pure oil creates a brighter light, filling our minds with the right things can help us shine brighter spiritually.
