Few people need to be convinced that G-d created the world. A greater challenge is believing that He remains intimately involved in everything that happens within it. When difficult events occur, we may struggle to understand why they are happening.
The Torah introduces the first of the Aseret HaDibrot with the words, “I am Hashem your G-d, who took you out of the land of Egypt” (Shemot 20:2). Rather than identifying Himself only as the Creator, G-d emphasizes His involvement in human history and His ability to intervene in our lives.
A well-known mashal illustrates this idea: A visitor to a shul wonders why certain people sit in the front while others sit in the back. He is told that he is confused because he has seen only one Shabbat. Over the course of an entire year, the seating arrangement becomes fair to everyone.
Our perspective is similar. We see only a small piece of a much larger picture. We may not understand everything that happens, but emunah means recognizing that our limited perspective does not reveal the entire story.
